Both Edison and her partner, who had been working to get Edison transferred, said authorities acknowledged there was a possibility of violence at the men's facility.

Edison's partner said she had been separated from the general population at Maplehurst, where she spent the night.

Edison, who works as a stand-up comedian, treated the ordeal with a good deal of humour.

In my opinion, no trans person should be held with either their identified sex or the opposite of that. We should always be placed in an individual holding cell for safety! This is horrendous. I am completely outraged to even be a part of the same country right now. How dare Canada boast about being all for equal rights of LGBT at the Olympics, yet we see this kind of inequality happening!

Single holding cell. That's it, end of story. No she should not be placed in the mens facility, she is in great danger in that environment.
No she should not be placed in the women's holding facility, I and by that I mean we do not personally know her, maybe she's a serial killer rapist, who knows. I do not disagree that she is female. She should be respected as a female and treated as one, but I believe that because we do not know her, she should not be placed with the other women UNLESS she has had all her surgeries, that's my personal opinion, feel free to disagree with me.

Single, individual holding cell. Period. End of story.

I am looking to become part of the law enforcement in my province and it may be stupid of me to say this, you may say don't make promises you might not be able to keep, I don't care. I promise, to all the trans people who come into my province, if I am ever the one dealing with you, I will not do this to you. I will do everything in my power to ensure that your are safely held in an individual holding cell.

That's all, sorry for how ranty that was, i'm just so angry.

She is legally female, she should not be in a male facility..

I got some more information about an hour ago that says she has been moved to the women's facility and that it was nothing but a 'mistake'. Anyways... i'm glad it got sorted out.

Fair. I understand the other view points and I don't really want to get riled up and try to debate my thoughts because I don't want to offend anyone and also I understand the viewpoints that oppose mine and where they are coming from. I'll simply say that for me, having studied in the field of criminals, we can never really know a person, whether they are straight, gay, lesbian, queer, post-op trans, non-op trans, etc, etc, etc. Anyone can become a victim or a perpetrator. That's all I want to say on that because we get into some touchy and extremely sensitive areas if we push deeper.

I respect your opinion and I understand the viewpoint.

With regards to this woman, i'm just happy she's been moved out of the men's facility. As for her visa issues, hopefully that will be sorted without corruption.

That somewhat bothers me too. Really??? Prison for a lapsed visa from a country that is supposed to be allies? Was she that big of a threat to Canada's national security?

Yes individual holding cells should be the standards. But I have noticed many place tend to go by downstairs anatomy as to where they place you unless you have a decent lawyer or stay in a progressive place

I disagree deeply with this.  I'm willing to bet you've never spent a considerable amount of time behind bars.....suffice to say.....being in a single holding cell for a week feels like two months.  Trust me, been there, done that.  If I were incarcerated again, naturally I'd want to be housed with the women...but if given the choice, I'd take my chances with the men and watching my back to being locked in a cold damp cell in the front of the jail with a clear glass front like I'm some zoo animal on display; with nothing but a comb, a toothbrush, and my own mind slowly driving me insane, unable to even see a clock to know how slowly time is passing, meanwhile hearing the constant racket of other inmates drunk, stoned, and belligerent being booked in not ten feet away while the C.O.'s brag about their pathetic lives among each other in unbelievably loud voices, in a facility build of cinder blocks reverberating back every sound wave making it impossible to sleep.....and the co's and the inmates peering in through the glass but never saying a word. 

Isolation in a holding cell for any period of time is beyond cruel and inhumane.

The problem though comes in when you lock up pre op woman in either gen pops. Both can have really bad results . I know in the Florida state prisons it's. Well not pretty

Yep. Absolutely terrible being dope sick too. Wasn't in holding for a whole week though, thankfully. That would be hell. I suppose it beats being beaten/raped to death.

As for worries about a pre-op being jailed with other women, even if she were a rapist, I imagine she'd be in more danger by the other women if she tried anything. Women tend to look out for each other in there.

I have never been incarcerated no, I am a law abiding citizen who will work in law enforcement upon graduation, but I have been in our jails and prisons, I have spent time in the 'hole' to see what it's like and that is not what I am recommending, Solitary is different then individual holding. I only went to a local prison last week and got to look at some of the individual holding cells. They are just that, individual. There are also cells specifically for individuals who may be targeted by others whether that's because they are weak or frightened and therefore targets for abuse or because they are part of a gang or a pedophile. Anyone who is at a high risk of being ganged up on by the other inmates, at least in this province will be moved into a more secure individual cell to keep them safe.

Plus, i'd like to confirm, she was not serving time, she was being held. Theres a difference there that is incredibly important to note. She would not be

You know it!  I was dopesick too, with a concussion, a black eye, and a sinus infection....looking at 4 to 16 years if convicted.  It was the worst week of my life.

I have to agree with this.  If a pre-op went to a women's prison and attempted or succeed in raping someone; they'd better hope the CO's get them first, or the other inmates would be performing SRS with a shiv.

What I described was a holding cell in a county jail, not "the hole."

Also, I was not in on a sentence, but awaiting trial for charges I later beat.  SAME SITUATION.  Again, my description was NOT of solitary confinement, but a regular holding cell.

Trust me, if you haven't walked that mile, YOU DON'T KNOW. PERIOD.

Apparently, she went to school with my sister.

It really is a small world! It's kind of scary when you start like looking at all the famous people you know through like two or three people.

Anyways I wanted to give everyone an update, we've been informed that she was released back to her country this morning/last night with no restrictions on on returning to Canada.
