so i'll be getting new pair of glasses today or tomorrow. (not like the earring buying that ended abruptly if you remember :) i'm really getting them this time)
i've not been very happy with my older pair but had to wear them anyway. it's half frame rectangular lens, and the frame is dark blue. the horizontal edges of the lens are curved. does that make any sense? the lens shape is probably what bothered me as it looks too female to me. too bad i can't post a photo right now.
since i'm very much in the closet right now i can't really go ahead and ask the shopkeeper to show me glass styles for guys. so can you guys suggest what type of glasses i should buy? it has to be feminine enough for my parents to agree, but masculine enough to get taken for a guy in the public. i don't know if any of you remember my face from the photo i posted in do i pass thread, and i deleted those photos sometime ago. what kind of glasses should i buy? thanks in advance!

I wouldn't worry overly about male or female frames since I've noticed that recently pretty much the only difference between the two are the colors and sizes (smaller for the girls). There's also a cool app if you have an iPad that will let you try on frames with a picture that my sister and I used to shop for frames when we bought glasses around Christmas time. Glasses.com app I think. It lets you try on and compare four different frames at a time.

And don't forget that there are unisex frames as well. :)

I ended up opting for contacts myself but my old frames...well frameless glasses still work (My eyes have settled mostly finally) and I pass when I wear them, and they have been my glasses (lens strength changes twice) even when I was still passing as female.

Personally I love my extended wear contacts. No worries about frames being too girly, and I can even sleep with the contacts in. :)

You can check out zenni optical. They have a huge variety, you can upload pictures and "try on" the frame, they have unisex, mens women's and everything in between. I use them and I can get 10 pairs for about $110. They are made in China like everything else but the company is based in California. They have designer frames just without designer logos and all you need is script.

Thin rimmed rectangular glasses might be a good shot. Thin rimmed are delicate enough to hopefully appease your parents, but rectangular glasses make your face seem more angular and masculine. I recently got a pair like that by Gant at Costco, frames only cost about $50.

I find readers are little harder than regular glasses. They are really cheap and assume men have very huge heads.

I know the general idea is that trans men should go with more rectangular glasses to offset the more rounded face that FAAB have vs MAAB. You could just tell the person that you don't like feminine frames and are looking for something more gender neutral, even cis tomboy girls would legitimately make a request like that.

thanks for the replies guys. just fyi, i'm not buying them online but from a shop, and i don't have access to internet through an electronic device any bigger than my tiny phone within these two days. so sadly i won't be able to try out the softwares you suggested in time. i would have asked the shopkeeper to show me 'not so girlish' frames if i was going alone. but the problem is dad is coming with me too. i wouldn't have minded mom, but dad is someone who so resists the fact that his 'daughter' is trying to act like a boy. two yrs back when i was getting my first glasses he asked the shopkeeper to show us some glass frames for 'girls'. yes he emphasized that. and he went on suggesting all kinds of round frames, pink frames and red frames. so this time i need a better aim. for example i can now go and ask for rectangular frames. any more suggestions? should i go for full frame? and the colour, is blue okay or is black better than that?

I've been wearing Paul Frank frames for years. They're mostly very unisex. You could ask to look at Paul Frank (or similar) frames by name. They're also on the more reasonable end for price.

And in case you can't really see that on your phone, some of my favorites:

Blues Explosion

Kid Royal

And I'm currently wearing Beat Poet Holiday in my avatar

I have the kind that are rimless along the bottom edge:

Dark blue, dark brown, or black would be the most masculine and more grown up looking than a bright blue, though depending on your age there might not be anything wrong with looking boyish.

i got them! black half framed, with red lines along the edges of the...how do you call it? the part that runs from the lens to your ear. lens is rectangular, no curved edges this time. very happy and satisfied. i had a haircut as well today and it turned out shorter than expected. when we came home mom said i looked like a boy with the haircut and the new glasses. my friends also said the new glasses are cooler than the old ones. huge thank you to all who replied!

and i thought i should share the story as well. the guy at the shop took me straight to the cool dark framed rectangular collection before i said a single word about my preferences. maybe it's easy to guess with my tomboyish appearance. while we were picking and trying different frames from that collection dad was constanty coming up with cute pink, gold, red, round etc. frames. i calmly refused at first but it soon got annoying that i finally had to say pretty loudly 'dad please, NO.' and when i had selected like three best ones to choose from dad asked the guy 'are they ladies' glasses?' to which the guy said 'actually sir most of the glasses don't come as ladies or gents. these are pretty unisex'. i so wanted to give that guy a high five. back at home dad said he prefers the old pair more. when i complained to mom about what he did at the shop he said 'i was suggesting what i see pretty girls wearing everywhere.' i dont know how he'd react if i ever tried to come out to him. anyway i'm very excited :)
