So I'm getting my name changed (providing all goes well) tomorrow, and I'm not sure what to wear.  I filed my petition today, and most of the people I saw there were wearing jeans and T-shirts.  Of course, this wasn't actually in court in front of a judge, but the jurors I saw weren't too dressed up either.

I'm going to work immediately after, and I wear a white button up shirt, sometimes with a sweater vest.  Would this be alright?  Alternatively, I have button up vests, ties, and a suit jacket.  I just don't want to be too over or under dressed.  Suggestions?

I'm really nervous to talk to the judge in front of everybody!  I know it'll probably be fine, but is there anything I should be prepared for?

Office attire is indeed appropriate. Just relax, be honest and respectful to the court and everything will be fine. Good luck! :)

Hi!

So, congratulations on making your name official.  I'm like sooo totally jelly!!!  I still have to wait until July 24, thanks to LA's backed up courts.  I filed my papers in December after my otherwise wonderful endo held my papers up for 5 months.  OK, sorry about the rant.

Today you will celebrate one of the best days of your life.  I think you should wear whatever makes you feel and look like a million bucks.  You will stand tall and proud, face the judge and declare how it will be from now on.  How do you see yourself at that moment, being the happiest you can be and celebrating afterward?  Now what do you see yourself wearing?  I'm thinking there is at least a tie involved unless you're a really laid back individual where it would just look forced.  My first suit screamed, "Defendant!" BTW.

All the best to you and your corrected ID.

Thank you, Jill!  I took your advice and wore my nicest clothes.  As expected, everything went fine.  Actually, it hardly took any time at all, and it was much less embarrassing than I had been afraid it would be.  :)
