I mailed in my background check with finger prints on Nov. 22. They cashed my money order on Jan 15th. I didn't get the form that said finger prints were illegible and thought it was 6 weeks from when they cashed the money order. I call them today and now I have to pay another 10 buck for fingerprints and wait even longer. I had gotten my stuff around Jan 15th. my name would be correct for commencement. I pissed because all school s*** requires my legal name.

In short I feel stuck because almost everyone knows I'm trans at school and I can't get a job when my legal name comes up to employers. I'm thinking about grad school, but I don't have time to take the GRE at this point, so I'd go to the same school. I just want some kind of progress, so that I can exist without the yeah that's that girl that looks like a boy comments every day and the ability to use the restroom without walking 1-3 blocks to use the restroom.

I'm sorry, that sounds horribly frustrating.  I hope that everything gets cleared up sooner rather than later.

Update: I may have to redo my CBI stuff too which makes me even more angry because in states like TN you don't need a background check.

In lighter news if I harass student life near graduation time I maybe able to have my name said correctly, but not correct on the paper diploma. I don't know if it is BS or not because the registrar has given me false info/not gotten paper work filed in a timely matter.

If this next fingerprint card gets damaged in the mail I'm going to try and somehow get a TN license to not deal with bureaucracy.

Dude, seriously - send in more than one fingerprint card.  I did the same thing and made damn sure they had multiple prints to choose from.  It may seem like overkill, but it's too long of a wait to stuff around.

I transitioned well after graduation and I was able to change my name on my transcripts AND my diploma.  A pain and cost some extra $$ but doable.

Changing your name seems so easy in Australia by comparison, all we do is fill in a form and hey presto, new name - no judges, no court, no finger prints... don't mean to rub it in though, you have my sympathies and I hope it get's resolved quickly.

You might check your university's policy on post-graduation name changes (some do, some don't). If you get it legally changed before the date you graduate you should at the very least be able to get your official records corrected.
