My First Job Interviews

Yesterday I had two job interviews, my first since I began transitioning. Both were for customer service positions, one at a call center the other in a place where I would interact with customers face to face on a daily basis. Both interviews went very well and I've been selected to move to the next step in the hiring process by both companies.

Honestly I was terrified to go to either interview, especially the one where I'd be dealing with customers face to face. I had no idea how I would be treated, or how the interviewer would react. I seriously wondered if a company would be willing to put me, a transwoman in a position where I would be selling to their customers. The answer was shocking. I had applied for a part-time hourly sales position. The person interviewing me told me that given my experience (twenty years in sales) that he felt I'd be better off in a full time commissioned sales position, because the pay is substantially higher. Less than ten percent of their employees work in commissioned positions. I was worried that they wouldn't want to hire someone like me, and they seem to be willing to put me in the top ten percent of their sales force right from the start.

All in all both interviews were pleasant experiences. I didn't sense any discomfort from either interviewer. Both saw me as a woman and neither seemed to give it a second thought. Now I sit and wait for my application and resume to move up the chain at both companies. Hopefully I will hear something from one or both of them by early next week.

Great news Allison! I sincerely hope they call you back real soon. I bet you feel a lot stronger and confident after going through the interview process. I am proud of you for tackling this head on! :)

That's awesome! Congratulations and good luck!

I myself am currently trying to get my first post transition job. So far I've received no calls back for interviews. But, it only takes one... I'm real nervous about it though, since a lot of the jobs I've applied for are customer service oriented. And of all the places Ive applied, only three state straight up they dont discriminate based upon gender identity... So, with any luck, one of those three will call me back.

It took quite a while for me to get any call backs too. At first I was blaming it on the transition but then I realized that I had been applying for work and had profiles on job search sites under my old name and I wasn't getting calls under that name either.

I have been focusing my search on employers that are known to have open policies toward LGBT people. The Human Rights Commission has a database on their website: http://asp.hrc.org/issues/workplace/list.asp?&page=1&order=OrgOfficialName,ASC

I knew it wasn't related to my transition, because, well, how would people know from an application when they haven't met me? It's not like there was a box marked "check here if you're a ->-bleeped-<-"  ;D

That said. I got a call for an interview today. At Macy's, which includes gender identity in their anti discrimination policies. So, fingers crossed. And now I have a week to figure out what to wear!

An update:

I didn't get the sales job, I received an  email stating "we do not have a position that is equivalent to your job expertise at this time.  We have found your credentials and employment experience to be strong and would like to consider you for future opportunities".

The other job I applied for was for a customer service representative in a call center. I had a 2nd interview this morning and it seemed to go well. They told me that I should hear something within the next three weeks, and if hired I would start April 21st.

Update Number 2:

I didn't get the call center job, they called me earlier this week and told me they have decided to move forward with other candidates.

But...

The store I interviewed with called me yesterday and they want me to interview for a job in Men's Suits/Shoes. My interview is scheduled for Monday.
