Of course the simple answer is just "drink what you like", but the truth is that next to eating, socially drinking alcohol is an extremely cultural thing. Therefore it is understandable that there are some gender issues that can come into play.

We might not like or agree with it, but  there can be strict cultural rules are built around these sorts of things and people can face consequences (Maybe just getting picked on, or maybe loosing an important customer or even your job) if those rules are not followed.  Just feel lucky you are not in a place like Japan, where the unwritten (but strictly enforced) rules about drinking (such as how you hold you glass when it's being filled) can get you into big trouble if they are not followed appropriately.

Since I consider myself a bit of an expert on drinking alcohol (20+ years experience   ;) )  I will offer my input.

Here in the US, most people feel that drinks fall into two basic types

sweet and fruity = Girly
Sour, bitter and/or strong = Manly

If you want a "girly" drink just because you don't want to taste the alcohol, there are many alternatives (some listed below)  that are basically unisex (just in case you're out in 'guy' mode and don't want people to get on your case).  If you want to drink "girly" drinks because they make you feel feminine and you want to express that, then drink whatever you want.

That being said here are some options for sweeter drinks that are basically unisex (or even masculine) in some cases.

-Two ingredient drinks (whiskey and Coke, Seven-and-seven, rum and coke, etc)

-Drinks that don't taste like alcohol (at least not too much) and any bartender worth a darn should know how to make. such as:

1. Margarita (Everyone knows what this is)
2. Long Island Ice Tea:  This drink was basically designed to hide the taste of the large amount of alcohol that is in it.
3. Alabama Slammer:  Basically tastes like fruit punch, and is also very good at hiding the large amount of alcohol that is in it.
4. Tequila Sunrise: It's in a song by The Eagles, so I'm pretty sure it's still unisex.
5. Mai Tai:  If you like tropical tasting stuff this will do it
6. Mojito: Tastes kinka like minty rum and 7-up
7. Midori Sour: Melon liqueur, but if you put the word "sour" after it, it doesn't come across quite as girly
8. Bloody Mary:  good choice but you need to like tomato juice
9. Whisky sour: tastes like whisky and lemonade

- If you like the taste of alcohol, but just wan't something mixed here are some options

1. Side car (cognac, orange liqueur) : Basically an orange version of the appletini.  Really strong, but sweet don't order if you don't want to taste alcohol.

2. Manhattan:  Tastes like whisky but a bit sweeter.

Just remember to Drink responsibly (or you will probably pay for it the next day),  and never drink and drive.

Enjoy.

If I want to look like a girl, I need to eat like one.

Great post SciNerdGirl! I agree with you!

Bloodmary was the last thing I asked when I was at a pub not two weeks ago. It wasn't bad at all, but mine was tasting too salty...

Nowadays I don't know...I think I simply surrendered to my taste for "girly" drinks.

I really don't drink much, just on very rare occasions, when I am hanging out with old friends...and this is perhaps once a month. I don't care anymore. If someone says "that's a girly drink" I'll say "so what?" and smile. But now mostly I stick with some malzbier and I'm done...I hate getting drunk.

Drinking red wine is great too and I don't think it is girly... but sometimes people says it is "made for fancy rich people".

it's another stupid gender steryotype like eating salat or beef, or drinking tea or coffee.

I think the reason why it became a steroytype that men drink beer and women drink fancy drinks.
is because drinks (as far I noticed) are usunally more colourfull, tastefull and Expensive than beers,
so when guys want to impress someone they will buy them a drink rather than a beer. but this is just my theori.

I usunally cant afford drinks so for me people who buy drinks are people who either got money, dont care about getting drunk, or want something special/diffrent luxery.
its not about gender more about what kind of party-type you are in my book.

Yeah, like men drink their coffee black and women like it with milk and such, sweet in other words.

Stupid stereotypes that society has created to separate women from men.

Personally I very much dislike beer, do not like the taste of it at all. Though there are some beers that are tolerable for my pallet. Such as Blue Moon beer. I would not drink it often, but if offered I would drink it. I would say I like ale (flavored ale), more specifically pumpkin ale. I had that in Halloween, and really liked the taste of it. I drink sort of fruity drinks per se. I like tequila sunrises, and such. I don't really order complicated drinks like ones listed so far, I think some are good, but I guess I do not think they are that great? I like drinking Tequila with salt and lime, rum and coke, Jack and coke. I like to try different drinks that sound good. Though I suppose I have had the hesitation of getting "girlie" drinks because of the stereotypes. Seeing as I am an insecure transguy and most of the time I feel like I am not man enough and such, so I hesitate. I end up getting them anyway, and just think "the hell with it".

Even so, thoughts of what people are thinking run through my head, such as "Why is that guy getting girlie drinks, ugh he's gay" or thoughts telling myself "Man all these guys getting beer I must look like an idiot." There is nothing wrong with being gay, nothing at all. I do not consider myself gay, but whenever people think I am, it just makes me feel like my female past is coming to haunt me, you know? Not sure if people had this similar kind of feeling. Then sort of fear runs through me, because you know how these idiots discriminate against gay people now imagine if they found our I'm trans.

Anyway sort of going off subject here. So I feel like I hesitate due to those stereotypes, but really that does not matter, at least it should not matter. Like I said, stupid bs people come up with to separate gender. It should be whatever people like and let it be. Not all women are "soft" and not all men are "tough", just be yourself and do what you want to do. As for drinks, it is all about what you like.
