A few handbag questions:

- When does the urge/need to carry a handbag arise?

- Do you miss the days of grabbing your keys, wallet, and phone, stuffing them in trouser pockets and being fully-equipped to handle everything in the typical "day in the life of a guy"?

- What kinds of things should go in the handbag?  Makeup?  Advil?  Pens?  A snack?  What do you put in there that you can't live without?

- How many handbags do you own?  Is it an ongoing collection, or do you stick with one at a time?

- Do they have to be expensive?  Do other girls judge you based on what bag you carry?

Given the inordinate amount of time and money the cis-girls I know spend on their handbags, I'm surprised this kind of essential "how to be a real girl" advice isn't a sticky post here.

Please share.  Pics would be awesome too.

To answer the questions one at a time:

- When does the urge/need to carry a handbag arise?

A handbag is an accessory much like a shoe or a scarf. One uses it to embellish one's outfit. It's cute and awesome and girly.

- Do you miss the days of grabbing your keys, wallet, and phone, stuffing them in trouser pockets and being fully-equipped to handle everything in the typical "day in the life of a guy"?

I still do that now in my day to day life. I only do handbags on dates or events. I have a default tote in the summer when I tend to wear more dresses that don't have pockets.

- What kinds of things should go in the handbag?  Makeup?  Advil?  Pens?  A snack?  What do you put in there that you can't live without?

Glasses. Gum. Emergency Underwear. Flats if I'm wearing heels. Anything, really.

- How many handbags do you own?  Is it an ongoing collection, or do you stick with one at a time?

Personally I own about seven but I have a mom and three sisters so I borrow liberally from them. I tend to have a default black one and I switch to one of the other ones on dates depending on the outfit.

- Do they have to be expensive?  Do other girls judge you based on what bag you carry?

They don't have to be expensive but they communicate something about you. I have quirky indie ones and a single Louis Vuitton purse that my dad got for me from an estate sale that people do notice when I use it, so I don't use it that often because I'm not an LV kind of gal, but I don't part with it because it's from my dad.

Quote- When does the urge/need to carry a handbag arise?
Pretty much all the time when I go out. The only exception is if I'm going to bike or walk in the park and then I'll take any valuables with my, but leave it hidden in the car.

Not at all. I find it more convenient to have everything already in my purse and it's ready to go. Throw the phone in, grab the keys and go. (Wallet, feminine of course, is already in there.)

Currently I keep the following:

  • Hairbrush (a must and can't live without)
  • Extra hair pins and scrungee, should I need it
  • Breath Mints
  • HRT Meds
  • Tylenol
  • Cough Drops
  • Woman's Wallet
  • Keys
  • Cell Phone
  • Lip gloss and/or lip balm
  • Pens
  • Sometimes a snack
  • Sunglasses when they are not in the car
  • Letter from Doctor stating my gender status just in case since I still have a male ID. Fortunately I've never had to use it.
  • Sanitary Napkin (just in case a woman asks for one in an emergency in the restroom and just in case my wife needs it in an emergency. It's come in handy for both occasions now.)
  • Sometimes a little makeup, but I use Bare Escentuals bareMinerals and I find that I never have to fix my makeup and it's feels so natural and light to wear.

Quote- How many handbags do you own?  Is it an ongoing collection, or do you stick with one at a time?
Currently one and it's a nice leather one that's not too big. I do want to get another one that's a little bigger for certain occasions.

Also my wife and I have about 3 other bags we share on different occasions and she has one that is just hers like one above is just mine.

Quote- Do they have to be expensive?  Do other girls judge you based on what bag you carry?
Mine is from Target (or Targèt ) and was $40 and at 43, I really don't care about how I'm judged about a cost of a purse. I'm practical when it comes to fashion. As long as it looks and fits nice, I'm happy.

I have 3 handbags... 1 every day one, a small sling bag and a clutch bag for evening events

To answer the questions..

I started using a hand bag when I went full time.

I don't miss putting things like my wallet in my pants.. A bag is so much bigger.. And a ladies purse is bigger than a mans wallet. And u just need to grab it..

The basic things I keep in my bag

Purse
Cigarettes
Lighter
Lipstick
Tissues
Pen
Cellphone
Keys
Breath mints
Pen
Sun glasses

Your question made me smile...a lot. I'm a people watcher. Everywhere I go. Whatever I am doing. The ultimate observer. Much like my dog here, Charlie Brown. He's the love of my life. A few years ago, I'm at ATL going between concourses and I have a couple of hours to kill. I'd been comfortably carrying a purse for a number of years by then to the displeasure of quite a few people.  I picked up on these observations: There were three types of guys. One type had every pocket crammed with crap, bulging. He looked pretty silly and an uncomfortable way to travel. The second was carrying a laptop case. Now laptop computers are generally two inches thick. However, these cases were almost always closer too twelve inches thick. The guys had nothing in their pockets. Flat. In essence, they had turned their laptop case into a de facto purse. They were indeed carrying a purse, but were too ashamed to admit it. The third of the group also had flat pockets, but was traveling with a female who was carrying a purse. These guys should have just had his own purse because hers was bulging. Anyhow, I found it all amusing.
But to answer your question. I have about four purses, browns, blacks and neutrals. I do need a Spring and a Summer one now. Kind of like shoes I'm finding : you never have enough. In mine I always have a couple of lipsticks, a gloss, a mirror, a hair brush, nail boards, a pen, wallet, lotion, rollerball fragrance, glasses, and tissue. I keep my keys clipped on the outside. It always goes with me. Everywhere I go.
