Painful lump after injection?

Farm Boy

I had to stick myself twice the last time I did my shot because I noticed an air bubble in the syringe the first time, and I took the needle out to get rid of it.  I expected it would hurt longer because of this, but it's been 6 days and I have a bruised lump the size of a half dollar.  (It's not hard or hot to the touch.)  I do my injections in my glute and I can walk with no pain, but if I sit on it wrong it hurts a lot.  My experience has been that it hurts the day of the shot, plus 2 days after, and then I'm good to go.  This is twice as long as usual, and it still hurts.  :/  I don't want to overreact, but at what point should I worry about this?

Hey there, I hope you talked to a doctor about this. From what you said it doesn't sound like an infection but it never hurts to ask. I have noticed that every once in a while this happens to me but never for 6 days.. I find that if it still hurts after one or two days massaging it helps.

It started hurting less after about 8 days, and after about 2 weeks the lump started going away.  It's fine now.  My body has never tolerated injections well (as far as pain, never any reactions) so I guess having to stick myself twice really ticked it off.  *Shrug*

Only a few of times have I had any lingering pain after a shot. You say that your body doesn't like injections, but I'm wondering if maybe you aren't fully relaxing your butt. I take all my weight off that side of my body before I inject, and it makes a huge difference. I often lean up against the bathroom counter and just let my other leg take all the weight.

I recently had to inject twice, and I didn't fully relax the second time. I noticed the difference for a couple of hours. And the time my ex came home unexpectedly a few years ago after PROMISING to call first...holy hell, that hurt. I was just stabbing the needle in when he opened the front door. I bunched up and the needle pierced, and I was limping for a couple of days.

Boy, did I let him have it! To his credit, he was quite contrite.

My guess is you nicked or otherwise punctured a capillary deep down and essentially bruised yourself. I inject in my thigh and occasionally something similar will happen. I get a bit of a lump which I guess if I could sit on it would hurt. Sometimes bruising will show on the surface of the skin, not always.

You could both be right.  I lean up against the wall to take the weight off of one leg when I do it, but I may not have relaxed as much the second time.  My body does hate needles going into it, though.  I was leery of starting injectable T because whenever I have to get a shot (in my arm) for whatever reason it always hurts for a week.  I've done it just right a few times though, where I couldn't even feel where I'd done it unless I poked at it.  Guess I just did it wrong that time.

Arch- That sounds terrible.  Giving myself injections has made me feel worse for my dog when he has to get them, since he doesn't know to take the weight off.

Heh. It was one of my earliest self-administered shots, so I was already working hard at relaxing, if you know what I mean.

We went out for lunch afterward and for red velvet cake. I was limping around and trying NOT to be a drama queen. How well I remember that day.
