Cult science fiction show Orphan Black has introduced a male transgender character.

The series, which stars Tatiana Maslany in several roles, revolves around a series of identical clones, who all have different lives and personalities.

However, in a surprise twist in the eighth episode of the second season, a new clone played my Maslany was revealed to be a transgender man, Tony.

The show's creators Graeme Manson and John Fawcett told Zap2it they feel a lot of 'responsibility' in portraying a realistic trans character.

Yeah, it was good. Orphan Black is a great show. My only concerns are that Tony was such a douche and that his inclusion this late in the season seemed, thus far, peripheral to the overall story and a bit token. But then I guess clone Rachel, very central to Season 2, wasn't introduced until the end of Season 1 and portrayed as a real cow. So what do I know!

Some nice realisms included: he wears a packer (binding or or top surgery, evident but not discussed), is gay (or bi), injects T, everyone uses the right pronouns. He had long hair, and I know there's nothing wrong with that (have a trans guy friend who wears his hair very long) but it just made Tony look a bit too much like clone Sarah and it kept bumping me out of the buy into of the reality of it.

Overall though I thought it was a great inclusion of a trans character.
