If the amount of providers is low, yeah the price would be high. But I actually had this convo with my BF and he said that there's such an awareness of laser now that even guys do it and it brings down the price because then other people got in the business. Where I am, there is tons of laser clinics. I imagine NYC is the same and the cost is around $300 for six sessions.

Yup, I checked. And I was wrong. It's $150 for six full face sessions in NYC. So, if you're paying $7,650 for laser. Um, get a plane ticket, take a trip, and go to NYC, It'll be cheaper. And fun!

I'm having some serious doubts people are getting 6 sessions for 125.  Unless you mean 125 each session?  In that case, whoops! 

Wax? Tweezing? I start fainting just reading doing such a thing on something as dense as facial hair. That sounds really extreme.

I'm about to have my 5th laser depilation at a clinic of aesthetic medicine in Prague next Wednesday and I pay 4000 CZK per session which at current rate is like 200 USD.

In between I use a razor and cover some bad spots with a bit of make-up. And that seems to work well even at a close look. So as many before me suggested: razor.

I have a tendency to see phantom facial hair though when I think about it. Especially below my nose as that's the only area where there's still some density. And it turns out it's just shadow from my nose :-) .

I agree $1,200. is very high for 6 treatments. I can have 6 sessions done here in Florida for around the price Joanna quoted, $350. I've also been checking into electro because all I have left are grays after over a year treating myself with my own lasers and IPL. All the dark hairs, and even about half the grays are gone.

Back on topic though, I think $1,200. is very high and if I were you I'd shop around before committing to anything. As for the one night thing, I agree with others here who recommend a close shave and a good foundation. Waxing your face will ruin your skin and may leave scarring. And trust me, you don't want permanent facial scars. As for plucking? I used to pluck mine before my life became so busy and I never once had a problem with ingrown hairs or hairs coming back J shaped. However this must be taken into account: I'm Native American so I never had much facial hair or thick beard as you're describing. I could pluck my entire face in a little over an hour and a half before any laser treatments. If you have a very thick beard as you describe, plucking would be very impractical just to attend a one night affair.

I can't do my neck as the skin is too thin, but really it's not so bad. I prolly have much less dense hair than most though. This can be a problem as I don't think that laser treatment can remove this due to white hairs having no pigment. Do I have any other options other than electrolysis? Laser would have been so much quicker although possibly more expensive. I  also wondering whether or not hormone treatment once started will slow down beard growth and weaken the hairs that do grow therefore reducing the electrolysis sessions.
Now I have to cake myself in make up to help hide beard shadow. I would prefer make up to be light and natural. My avatar pic was taken just after a close shave and my anxiety is heightened when I become aware of stubble coming through my make up before  any day is through!

I go to a med spa here in Phoenix that charges 125$ per hour for electrolysis, but she can over 750 hairs an hour.  That is with an hour of anesthesia.  It's unfortunate that it hurts so much, otherwise I'd do full facial clearing in 3-4 hours.

The only other option you have for removing gray hairs with laser is to use the carbon dye. It's not expensive but it sure is messy. Wear a dark colored top you don't care much about if you decide to go this route. In addition, for best results the hairs themselves should be removed from the follicle to allow the dye to penetrate to where it will do the most good. This means tweezing. If you have a thick coarse full beard I can see how this could get very painful. You can use the dye without plucking first, but your results won't be as good and you'll need 3 times as many treatments. What's worse, with facial hair, only 30% of it is in the growth phase at any given time, which means that no matter what hair type you have, the most you'll be able to treat at any given time is 30% of it. This is why so many treatments are involved in removing facial hair.

You mentioned previously self treating your own facial hair using a combination of laser for dark hairs and electrolysis for grey hairs. It is possible to buy or hire equipment to treat oneself. I know there are products/ machines out there but I'm no expert and would worry about damaging / scarring my own skin! In the uk I have heard of a home kit called a "no no". Wondering if anyone else has heard or used this. ? Wondering also what machine you use , it's cost and time frame in getting job done ?. If its best that you be appropriately trained or qualified in using specific machines then it would quite literally be a " no no " for me having fear and concerns about both lasers and needles in electrolysis. God I wish I knew all this info about  36 years ago when I was pre puberty. Would have been so much easier. Oh to be young again or better still, been born a cis girl!

Miami? I live in West Palm Beach and I paid $150 for 7 sessions of LHR... And I'm on my 5th now and trust me it WORKS. I used a groupon... I would think the savings are worth an hours drive.

I'm fairly sure the no-no is an extremely toned down device.  If you want an at-home device, try the Tria 4x Laser.  It has shown to be quite effective for those with brown or black hairs.  I tried it and I could tell it was working on the few dark hairs I had, but the vast majority of my hair is blonde/red, which it does nothing to.  Electrolysis is painful and a little more expensive (much more expensive depending on your technician) but it is proven to work %100.  I like those odds.

Let me just mention that I'm broke and can barely afford my meds, but I anxiously look forward to my electro sessions because I feel a sense of finality I NEVER got from laser.

DON'T BUY A NONO! Its a waste of money and doesn't work as advertised. Not even on my near vellus hairs!

I have a professional grade laser that will treat up to 60 hairs at a time with plenty of intensity settings. You need the key to even use it. I also have a constant beam single hair laser I use to shape my eyebrows. I also have 1 IPL device for large areas such as legs, etc. The IPL's only drawback is you need to keep buying bulbs for it at $35. a pop.

Being Native American, I never had a full beard or facial hair on my upper lip (no mustashe). What I had was about half my natural hair color (black) and half gray. I've been treating myself for a year now and have gotten 3/4 of the facial hair I had removed permanently.

The carbon dye is used with laser/IPL to make the treatment effective on lighter hair colors. However -and this is very important. Carbon dye is most effective with the hair removed from the follicle. Meaning, for best results you should tweeze an area about 1 and 1/2 inches in diameter, apply the dye, let it soak in, then treat. You can use the dye with the hair in the follicle, but it will take way many more treatments.

In answer to your question, no, the carbon dye doesn't dye your gray hair black. How it works is, it soaks into the pores including the ones with hair follicles, giving the laser something or a target to burn.

I do plan to look into an electrolysis device for the simple reason is I can't even stand hair on my face for 1 hour let alone the near week it would take for what I have left to grow out long enough for me to tweeze.

Why not go to an old fashioned barber, hot towels and all. Tell them you want to look good for photographs so little or no shadow. They don't have to know you're wearing a tux instead of a dress.

I paid 7650.00 for 9 full face sessions, everything from my sideburns and cheeks to my full neck (neck is not usually included but they threw that in for me as well) I had mastered the art of shaving close after going to a strict as hell culinary school for 3 years where they were impossibly strict about facial hair (this was pre-transition), and i just couldn't do it anymore ~ it may sound expensive, but all the other places i went to were charging 8000, 9000, even 10k... and many of them didn't offer payment plans. Not to mention that the person i spoke to told me that if I need more sessions after the 9 full sessions, that they will cover them free of charge ~ and it also includes life-time touch ups if its ever necessary, free of charge. They also threw in a package of expensive (and amazing) beauty products that me and my wife are considering investing in because even my wife fell in love with them from the included package (it came with a face wash, body butter, skin toner, skin serum, devil's mint body scrub, ingrown eliminating pads and anti-aging collagen night cream, from the brand Elemis that after further investigation turns out to be a very expensive brand)

Honestly, I would rather pay near to 8k now to have it gone forever, than keep spending money on waxing and razors and shaving lotion >_< and the right concealer... The person i spoke to at the laser place told me that my hair type was perfect for permanent removal ~ the only reason they say laser isn't permanent is because some places do it wrong, other places don't have the right lasers, and it requires a certain type of hair for it to work optimally... while electro doesn't require any sort of hair type; it works on all hair types ~ laser on the other hand can't be done on blonde hair... there was a guy in the reception area who worked for the laser place that said he wanted to have some treatments but that he isn't eligible for laser because of his hair type (thin and blonde)

I realize i paid a crazy amount and i too could have used a groupon ~ but honestly; I was low on my scale for tolerable disappointments and the reviews for the groupon laser places down here were too unbalanced to tell if it would be a good investment, so i just went to a high end laser place who had 5 star reviews and paid it with a care credit which i am now paying off monthly... and for what I got, i don't think i was too expensive considering that it was the lowest price being offered compared to other high end, 5 star review places.

and yes... it works... amazingly... even after the first session you see results... once you reach the shedding phase, you will see WAY less hair ~ i've only had one session out of the 9 and I'm already monumentally happier because large portions of my facial hair and shadow are completely GONE. I don't have to put NEARLY as much concealer as I use to and it just feels so much nicer and smoother.. i can't wait to finish it all and never have to worry about shaving my face again. and also not have to wear make up every place I go.
