Julia Serano, a transgender activist and writer, pointed out that it is not acceptable to consider attraction to trans women a fetish, because that reduces them to fetish objects.   

I could easily hide this, [. . .] I decided to be open about it, though, because of how few openly trans-attracted people there are in the world and how this silence contributes to stigma about trans people and sexuality.

It's an interesting read.

Well, personally, I think there are a lot more than just Matt. And I really don't think it is a fetish either. I just think most are too scared of society to say that they would find a transwoman attractive. And Godbless the ones that do admit it. But that is just my opinion.

I'm more attracted to trans women than to cis women. It's easier for me to be open about that because it isn't my exclusive focus, and because I'm transgender myself. I also love androgynous people of all backgrounds. And there are some very sexy transmen out there.

I've always been uneasy about the terminology around "->-bleeped-<-s" and fetishists. We assume motives that are very specific and not-normal, and it feels weird that those of us who are trans get a pass on this labeling. I don't have a problem with someone who is primarily attracted to me based on a particular detail, as long as they are respectful about it. If it is a healthy relationship, it will grow more complex and not be fixated on that one detail anyway.
