So this is probably something to ask the court, but I'm going to have my legal name change done in Michigan, but I need to then send a certified court order of it, along with forms VS-24 and NC-210/310 to California to get a new birth certificate and legal gender change. Will I have to get a new driver's liscence, social security card, passport, etc. before getting the new birth certificate, and then again after I get it? Or will just having the court order with the current documents be satisfactory?
Basically, I'm concerned about the $110 for passport renewal, any fees associated with social security, and then $24 driver's licence correction fee. I don't want to pay those twice, considering the legal fees will cost me nearly $200 anyways, doubling those could add another $300 rather than $150.

You only need to change things once. Before or after the birth certificate won't matter for DL or SS.

But to change legal gender, I have to do that in California, where I was born. The website said it could take up to 2 months for them to mail me back the new birth certificate. That's a long time to go without a new driver's licence and an outdated social security number.

As a matter of clarification, the SS number isn't changed, for name or gender changes. They just mail out a new card for name changes, as gender is in the computers system, not indicated on the card.

The DL simply depends on what state you are in, SS is federal and makes no difference what state you are in. Once you have the court papers, it is your legal gender no matter what other documents say.

Well, California no longer requires a court order. Just an affadavit from a physician, and the VS-24 (birth certificate amendment) form. So it won't legally be changed until I get that birth certificate.

I see, I was a bit dense before. Well, 2 months is long, but not in the grand scheme of things. I guess it is up to you which is more important, the money you could save, or the correct name now and correcting the gender later.

FWIW, changing gender on my DL costed me nothing extra. They asked me if I wanted it changed when I gave them my name change papers.

They might, but the thing is, I was born out of state and to change sex (there is no gender marker on a Michigan DL) on the BC I'd need surgery. Being born out of state complicates things.
