KOCHI: Much before the Supreme Court recognized India's long marginalized transgender community as a third gender, Kerala government had introduced the option of 'intersex' in birth and death registration.

This year alone, according to figures available till June, nine births and six deaths have been registered as intersex. Interestingly, people have opted for the third sex option in districts as diverse as Thiruvananthapuram, Idukki, Malappuram, Palakkad and Kannur.
