I attended the WPATH biennial meeting in Chicago. Just got home. Wanted to pass along some experiences and reactions.
Seemed like about 1/3 of those present were trans, but that may be a low estimate. So many of the transpeople were totally awesome! Brilliant, beautiful, motivated, funny, accomplished. We truly are everywhere! The nontrans professionals were a good bunch, impressive and friendly.
Big pushes in the next few years will be for more uniformity in treatment protocols, more communication and connections between professionals involved in care of those with TG. Also, more research pushes to actually prove what works in treatment.. for instance, in what ways do hormones help? What measures change? (besides bra size!) One prime motivator is that many insurances or government payors won't cover a condition unless there is evidence-based treatments. With the quality of evidence having certain definitions. It is probably not a surprise to you that the quality of evidence of efficacy of treatments is not so good. So, be favorably inclined to participate in upcoming research efforts. Many will probably be web-based.
