With 30+ years of unwanted experience shaving my face I found one great way to do it:  I soap my face and shave it under the shower with the water spraying on my face.  The razor is instantly cleaned with every stroke and the shave is baby butt close.  A Gillette fusion works great but BIC makes a good 4-blade disposable that cuts close and is far cheaper than the fusion blades.

Apparently this is a thing--using soap as a shaving lubricant. I cringe at the thought of putting soap on my face unless I'm about to immediately wash it off. My hotel roommate did it and I made him stop and using some gel I had brought along. I've always heard soap was drying on sensitive facial skin but maybe it depends on how resilient your skin is. Still, sticking your face under the shower, doesn't all the soap get rinsed away anyway just as you barely get started shaving?

I would love to be that hairless, except for the face, but even that is not a big deal if I could be hairless all over.

Gel is atrocious. I can't stand putting that goop on my face. Regular pump soap is a terrible thing to shave with, but proper shaving soap is far better than that crap gel. I prefer tallow, but glycerin shaving soaps are fine too.

I should clarify. He was smearing hotel soap on his face. It wasn't shaving soap. I've never used that. Now I use Proraso which comes in a tube but I just brought a bottle of gel with me for a brief trip.

Using soap seems like a very bad idea even if you got a ridiculously good skin since it is likely to irritate the skin by drying it out etc.

I still have some shaving gel leftover from the days when I used to bother to shave my legs and armpits because I never liked body hair, so I'm using it for my face too because why not. Shaving gel is shaving gel and might as well use it instead of letting it go to waste. It works fine really, especially as I got a very sensitive skin. Doesn't help with the current pimple outbreak either.

Shaving gel never agreed with my skin, used to cut me all up. Shaving cream was the best, the original stuff. Regular liquid soap only if I run out of the shaving cream. I seem to do ok with a dull razor, too, for some reason, even though a sharp one gets the hair better. I have shaved my legs recently with a razor that I had used for a few times with no problem.
