I've been trying to feminize my voice lately, and I'm still confused about how this "falsetto then lower it" thing works. The way everyone explains it is that you bring it into a falsetto, hold your throat in the same position, and then lower your pitch. But my question is, if your throat is in the same position, doesnt that by definition mean you're still in the falsetto? Since it's that specific position of your throat that's creating the falsetto, doesn't that mean lowering it from the falsetto would require changing the position of your throat? This is where I'm stuck. I can do a falsetto as high as C5, but I don't understand what to do next.

Heck, I don't even know what a falsetto really is, high pitched voice? I just practiced my voice over the years until I didn't get anymore funny looks or 'sir', then I knew I was good. Any music or singing terms and I'm lost. I looked it up on Wikipedia and I still don't fully understand.

This series on Youtube explains very clearly how to use falsetto to achieve a feminine voice.

Still takes months of practice though.

yea, i'm stumped on this one though my voice is at the high female end of gender-ambiguous but still, whenever it comes to falsettos, i even watched the gender life videos, i still dont get it lol

From what Suzifrommd said, and what has been working pretty well in my practice, it is like you position the throat for falsetto, and then you just talk.

Like if you raise your pitch as high as you can with your speaking voice there will be a point, where in order to go higher you have to constrict stuff, kinda above your throat, that is the point where falsetto is. Once you constrict that you find you have more range above it but your resonance is way off, if you try and talk that high you sound like Monty python women. All kinda scratchy and weird, but if you keep those muscles tense but talk normally, your voice sounds pretty femme, but nothing like monty python or mickey mouse.

To get the right female voice, it is the combination of your chest voice and falsetto voice. It's called the MIXED voice. In other words, to find your mixed voice is not that hard but daily practice, dedication and be aware that: "IT'S ONLY BY SINGING" that you will find it, improve it, play with it and enjoy it... When you vocalize, "HE" and go up an octave or so, you exercise by singing-breathing (taking a deep breath), there's your mixed voice, just right there.. When you get lost, INHALE, take a DEEP BREATH, sing again and you will find your mixed voice back again. You start again, and again by singing the note "HE"... I'm going to add a sample...

It's like learning to bike, to keep balance at first it's hard, you will fall many times but you will recognize the sound so you pedal on your bike again, trying to keep a word sounding solid. Little by little you'll gain strength and your first words will sound solid, then the first phrase and so on... Go to youtube, Kathy Perez, how to find your MIXED voice, follow the exercises every day and finally one day you will get it.. You will laugh of joy when you'll realize how easy really is.. I wish you all the best..

I'm going to add an audio sample the way sounds the 3 voices, Chest, Falsetto and Mixed voice and how to find your MIXED VOICE.. Your target is your MIXED voice, this is the foundation of your female voice journey. The SECRET, the source, the magic sound.. THE MIXED VOICE!

Ok, I enclose 2 videos .. NOTICE THE DIFFERENCES... The mixed voice has the qualities of both, Chest and Falsetto(Head Voice)... Remember to take a deep breath and try to sing the note HE ( IS BY SINGING THAT YOU WILL FIND YOUR MIXED VOICE)..Is just right there in the middle of both..

FIRST FOCUS ONLY ON ACKNOWLEDGE THE 3 VOICES AND ITS QUALITIES AS SHOWN IN THE VIDEO... Then talking your first word will be the next step,, then Phrasing.. Is like learning to bike..  Your GOAL now is ONLY to get your mixed voice, singing the vocal exercises, recognizing the sound and qualities of each of 3...

Hi... I'm going to make a video with a detailed explanation of the 3 voices and how to find your mixed voice. As i said before, the goal at the beginning is to identify, to recognize, to feel the sound, feeling the texture, the density, the quality of your mixed voice. I'm not saying that you will talk with your mixed voice at the beginning, you are not there yet, ONLY but hearing your mixed voice while you vocalize, while you do the warming up exercises.

I would like to remark that the daily warming up exercises, vocalizing every day is CRUCIAL, is the most important step to get to the next level that will be talking, sound as a female. YOU HAVE TO STRETCH YOUR VOCAL CORDS, you must do it EVERY SINGLE DAY, EVERY SINGLE DAY.. If you don't stretch your vocal cords you can't go to a high register, to a high pitch. The highest you go, the easiest will be to talk in a high female range, pitch..... The warming up practice are very fluid, there're many of those exercises in the internet, youtube. Andrea James, Kathy Perez, and many other, doesn't mater which one you prefer as long as you have a daily routine, the one you like the most....

When you vocalize, have a glass of water, take a sip and keep your vocal cords moist.. I advice you get a digital piano (if you are going to follow the video I'm going to make), you can find many on these on the internet for free..  Eventually when you start talking, get a digital voice recorder device (I have the Olympus WS-321M- versatile, very reliable, best sound quality, USB connection, etc, but you can get a cheaper one on Ebay) it will be your "best friend".. Recording your voice allows you to learn closely how's the quality of your female voice, how it sounds in real life. We tend to perceive our voice different as it really is. We believe is higher but, hmmmm, it's NOT.

After a few months, you will be amazed about how much control and knowledge of your female voice you've gained. You will master your voice which so much power that you will know exactly at what level your voice is while using your mixed voice(you won't need the digital voice recorder anymore), if you need to go higher or not depending how you want to sound.... It's fascinating, is a JOY to talk with your mixed voice, the good news is that you have it, we all have the mixed voice, work on it, find it..

We own our strengths and our triumphs, our struggles and our failures, our passions and our dreams. OWN IT!

I am so totally lost on all this voice thing now, way too technical for me.  ???

I did not go through all that to obtain my female voice. Seems so confusing. I don't sound pretty, and I may have moments once in a while where it breaks for a moment, that's simply me being too relaxed or lazy, but never gotten mistake for a man by it, at least not in recent years.

I don't even remember what the hell I sounded like years ago, don't even know if I can duplicate it. Actually tried a few times recently, just sounded like a woman trying to sound like a guy, but that's a good thing for me since I don't want to ever sound that way again. I really need to get me some a/v cables so I can hear the sound on old family videos on my camcorder so I can compare, that'd be a good little project, a before and after on my voice. That's one thing I keep forgetting, need cables for camcorder, need to write that down.

Hi Megan, I'm sorry it sounds confusing, oops, I know!.. I really wish I could help you if what you are looking for is to improve your voice quality..    What about singing?   I know helps tremendously..    Have you consider voice surgery?

If you still want to try one more time, let me know, I'm willing to help you.. Maybe one to one by Skype will be more effective and waaaaaaay eeeeeeeasier.. I have some time because I'm off  just waiting for my voice surgery in a couple of weeks, so a lot of time on my hands before i come back to my regular life....

Peace and Love

Your most natural sounding voice is the one you use to speak your chest voice. When you talk in a "normal" tone, you will start in that voice. This is your "chest" voice. It's called that because most of the resonating happens in your chest.
When you are using your mixed voice, it definitely resonates in the throat.  A combination of BREATHING as you hear in the audio, then you contract your muscles in your throat, the tighter they contract, the higher the rate of vibration as air passes between them from your lungs.

Put a finger on your Adam's apple and NOTICE:
Chest voice: Adam's apple it's positioned down. Feel how it moves as you change your voice from Chest to Falsetto. When you are using your falsetto(head voice) your Adam's apple rise to the highest position. Then your mixed voice, your Adam's apple it's just in the middle..

Oh, no my voice is fine. Totally. I sound female enough. Just seemed so much easier the way I did it than all these complex steps and terms. I got it by singing. Feeling where it my voice was coming from when it sounded right, then simply just remembered. But no one ever, ever would want to here me sing, its atrocious, but I enjoy it, that's all that matters.  :)

Eh, no issue, you're just trying to help. I was just trying to grasp the instructions is all. Don't worry about that, I've always done things my own way anyway.
