I thought lidocaine was like supposed to be even stronger?
Lignocaine is a superior anaesthetic, but it's more the mode of delivery in this case.

My only problem has been I get like 10 minutes max once I take the shrink wrap off before I will start to feel the roots burn and in 20 minutes I can feel the surface of my skin again.
That's due to poor penetration through the skin - not much agent making it through and what little that makes it through is metabolised quickly.  Benzocaine tends not to stay around for long iirc.

I used to just put up with it, even though I had ready access to effective anaesthesia.  Call me a masochist, ;D

I do the same. Of course I treat myself at the moment so when it gets too bad I can take a break. Soon though, I'll be booking electro to rid myself of remaining grays so I'll no doubt feel it then.
