So I went for my first appointment today where I met with a nurse who made nice polite conversation in an effort to get to know me better, asking about my life, who I came out to, how I'm coping. I felt a bit shy but answered her questions politely. She asked about my job search, how'd I come by this decision and ask for my preferred gender pronouns. She went over with me the risks and changes when starting testosterone, did my bloodwork (ouch!) and told me that my next appointment will be October 8th for a physical, going over bloodwork results and possibly giving me a prescription for testosterone. In the meantime, my mother (silent treatment ongoing with my father) are still not very enthusiastic about the changes. This was evident when my mom didn't even make an effort to help me think of male names when I asked her for suggestions, her eyes never leaving the phone. I'm guessing she's hoping that this will go away and that I won't make an effort to go for it like I did with most things. My old college professor is a Facebook friend and is really going above and beyond for me, acting like the older sister I never had and encourages me to start a blog. She even talked about publishing a book on this, which will out me but I really don't mind.

Brother is 100% on-board with this, wanting me to be happy so that's good to hear.
This made me feel so euphoric that I didn't have to do the whole gender therapist letter route.
This is 11 weeks from now but I can wait, I know I can hold out until then...

I don't feel as dysphoric as most people since I'm painfully realistic and had to adjust my desires as such.

Congrats and good luck. It's good that you have support.

Yeah, it could be worse but things are just happening so fast even though I have to wait several weeks.
In the meantime, I have to make do with whatever male characteristics I have which include:

  • arm hair
  • leg hair
  • almost no sign of hips
  • happy trail
  • thick eyebrows

That's really good for you  :)  I'm a little jealous, because I'm stuck with the therapist route.
I'd suggest getting somebody who is totally cool with your trans-ness to help with names.
I would love to have my dad name me, but when I came out as trans to him, he called me a freak and didn't take it well, so I thought that if I let him name me, all I'll associate it with, would be that negativity. Like, every time I'd think about my name, all I would recall would be his reaction.
I'd get your brother to help out instead  :)

If it helps for names, here is what i used as a guideline. I used a first name starting with the same letter in my case S... So i could immediatly sign my papers with my female name with no one the wiser. So besides the pleasure of signing my female name, it made it easier for the eventual legal name change.

Passed that find something you identify with, something you like hearing  ;D

So many choices but not so much for the letter J.

As far as coming up with a name, check several different baby-name websites and look up names that way. I decided on my name (Sylas) by researching name meanings. If you want a name that has a particular meaning, most of the websites have a search for that.
It took me a while, but I'm happy with my choice, and in the long run you have the final say. Deciding on your name is a pretty personal accomplishment.
Good luck :)

There are a bunch of names starting with J.
James
Jacob
Joshua
Justin
Jack
Jace
Jerry
Jachen (so many ways to spell that, that's just how my cousin's husband spells it)
etc.

Or you could go with something completely different. I thought about having my mom name me but once she told me I would have been named Sheldon if I were born biologically male, I decided to just choose my own name because that's an awful name haha. But since your brother is relatively young I assume he should be able to give you some good names that aren't old sounding if that makes sense. Good luck though!

That's because none of those names would fit my foreign last name and I'm looking for something Spanish, not English.
I asked my mother but she was largely not caring and kept saying she doesn't know what she would name me so she's useless. Looks like my brother is the route to take if all else fails with search queries on baby names. Ive been leaning towards Francesco, Leonardo, Lui, Matias, Victor and Mauricio though.

You are very fortunate. It is easier for an FTM to be accepted as a male than it is for an MTF to be accepted as a female.  You can still look feminine, not have facial or body hair, not have a bulge in your pants; and still be accepted. As long as you are comfortable with the circumstances you will be accepted in the men's restrooms, locker rooms, exercise clubs (if you can still find one that has not become unisex), sports teams, etc. Having breasts and not having a penis will not be the same as having a penis and trying to be accepted in women's facilities and activities.

Ah, in that case some Spanish J names could be
Jorges (my brother's old therapist who was from Spain)
Javier
Jaime (pronounced Hi-Me or Hi-May, according to the Spanish teacher at my school)
José (I knew a kid whose parents were from Mexico with that name)

But only you can ultimately decide on a name. It definitely doesn't have to start with the same first initial as your birth name. All I can say is take your time because you don't want to be stuck with a name that you end up hating in the long run. But I'd definitely talk to your brother...even if it's just to run possible names by him.

I'm always looking for cool names to use in my books, and Sylas is most def cool.  So stealing it for a future character.

Just my tuppence, but I like Francesco, Victor, and Mauricio.

My dad named me when I was born, didn't give Mum a choice of anything.  So when I was getting ready to do my name change several years ago, I took a risk and told her that she could pick my new middle name.  Two seconds later she said "Amadeus".  My jaw, it dropped.  Absolutely brill choice, IMHO.  Took a while to get the funds, but now it's my legal name, and it was a huge relief when the judge just signed off and said, "Good luck."

Decided to go with Francesco. Franco or Frankie for short!
