DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION GRANTS GEORGE FOX RELIGIOUS EXEMPTION; SAYS COLLEGE CAN REFUSE TRANS STUDENTS ON-CAMPUS HOUSING
DANIEL BORGEN — JULY 11, 2014

"This week, the U.S. Department of Education closed (and ostensibly denied) Jayce's complaint, granting George Fox college an unusually speedy "religious exemption," and for the time being dashing any hope Jayce had of living on campus with the rest of his friends and classmates. Religious exemptions, it seems, are becoming the new normal. Exemptions, however, historically take years to get, according to Southwick. George Fox got theirs in just a few months."

"Religious exemption" seems to be the norm nowadays  :-\

It all has to do with who's got the money and who's giving the money.

Welcome to America, land of free and unchecked capitalism.

Two thoughts:
The first is religious institutions seem hellbent on making this part of the "Culture war", seeing as basically no theological justifications seem to be had for what bathroom transpeople use or if their housing is on campus or not. Are these places religious institutions or cultural ones?

The second, is that if I were the student I wouldn't want to go to that school anyway, I would do whatever I could to appeal the decision for posterity's sake but, really if they don't want me, they aren't getting my tuition money.

This^.

I have limited sympathy for this guy. Why does he need this school so badly? Go somewhere where they accept you for you.

I heard somewhere that he was doing it because most of his friends went there. But at this point, I would guess he's doing it mostly to combat the transphobia in schools. Because if nobody is going to break down these barriers, who will?

Well, I admire his staying power. But it's a private religious institution, and a lot of such places have a mindset that they are a bastion of virtue amongst a world out to destroy it with secular values. Wouldn't be where I would start trying to break down barriers.

Actually one funny thing is that George Fox University has quite a few graduates who are social workers or psychologist who deal with transit issues LOL
