FWIW, you can change the gender on your License and even SS without changing the one listed with your insurance.
Is that legal? And wouldn't there be a chance for trouble if for some reason ID were required along with one's insurance information and they didn't match up?

I know of at least one trans guy who didn't change his insurance gender but did all the rest of his markers. As far as I'm aware, you don't have to make them match. If you have female organs, you want female insurance.
The more I know, the more I know I don't know.

@lxndr i didnt know that, i thought there was no gender at all on the uk driving lic.

It's hard to explain how to tell how to read it. Basically the second and third numbers after the beginning of your surname is the month you were born in. They add 5 to the second number after the letters of your surname if you're down as female. So if the second number is a 5 or 6 it's female, and if it's 0 or 1 it's male.

Eg: SURNA905 is male and SURNA955 is female

Hope that made sense.

If you're talking about car insurance, the rules around that vary by state in the U.S. I don't know about laws elsewhere but it seems like a safe bet that they'll go by stated gender identity soon if they don't now.

We are talking medical insurance and far as I know it isn't illegal. It was suggested to do it that way on another trans site. If I remember or find it again, I'll tell you what it was.
