I had my surgery 2 weeks ago and I am finding it really hard to come to terms with the smell of the discharge in particular that comes out of me, especially when I dilate. It's at the point now where it physically makes me bork, I don't dread dilation I dread the smell! I also dread changing my pad as the smell is that overwhelming!

Has anybody else had this? And if so how did you deal with it and how long does it last as it is becoming unbarable!

Thanks!  ???

Yep the old dead gym bag smell.

Lasts till things get healed and a balance of pH.

Check with your surgeon if its OK to use a medicates douche. That sometime will help calm the odor.

Good luck and yes its a battle dealing with all the things that go along with healing.

For about a month, I had a putrid smell come from the surgical site. Douching did help a tiny bit. I didn't know what was causing it until a wad of old dressing fell out while I was taking a shower. Immediately afterwards, I had complete relief from the dead cat smell. Even the dilators smelt sweet! Maybe you've still got some dressing stuck up there?

There can't be dressing still up there or I wouldn't be able to dilate!

I was dilating with no problems for a month without realising there was some dressing still up there. The dressing was small and had decomposed into something very slimey, so was not presenting any impediment to dilation.

Yep the old dead gym bag smell.

I know it well. My surgeon recommends an iodine douche followed by a regular saline one once a week.

A number of ladies, myself included, take FemDophilus capsules. You can get these in a health food store. (They need to stay refrigerated.) You take them orally for a number of weeks and the probiotic organisms will get there.  Some ladies douche with active culture yogurt. Both of these will help establish a microflora conducive to better odor/health.

And yeah, I have that vaguely fishy odor. As long as the lube is clear it should be OK.

But as with all things, check with your surgeon about your concerns, ask for advice, and ask if it's OK to initiate anything on your own.

I believe the safest and probably best douche mixture is plain water with a capful of vinegar to mimic a natural vaginal pH. But yeah, there were some funky smells while things were healing... and with hidden granulation, etc, it could be months. It will get better, though!

Cannot say I've ever had that problem. I have a "different" small from that area but it's not disgusting or gross.

Slightly fishy odor here, it is not objectionable to me. I am a little past three months post op.

Edit added: I have massive granulation but it doesn't seem to cause any particular odor.

I ended up with a Candida Yeast infection that made things a bit malodorous at 16 days post op.  You may want to check with a Gynecologist and if that is the case, it is quickly cured, and life becomes less fragrant.  It was about 6 months for me before I began getting a "female" odor but since I had hayfever  at my usual pre-op levels, I really could not even smell my upper lip most of the time.

I had this post-op, but it stopped nearing a month in - make sure you douche, take probiotics and clean your anal area when you bath/shower. C: It'll be over in no time!

I am three weeks post op and there is almost no smell or odor. But I have to clean my cavitiy before dilating with water. I have to dilate with two sorts of cream, one is antibiotic and the other should help to heal necrosis fast.
