They're not bad shots. You have a good eye. It really all comes down to your understanding of light and how to adjust the settings to get the desired result. That's not always easy to do with a point-and-shoot, but it's possible. Keep taking photos, and play around with the settings. If you're in an area with a lot of sunlight set the ISO somewhere between 200 and 400. If you just want to capture a particular subject or item then make sure it's more illuminated than everything around it, reduce the exposure level, and voila.
