I want to say I despise going stealth, to me it is akin to going back in the closet. I'm learning, especially younger trans girls like me, go stealth and never show their faces in trans spaces. It makes me very angry and bitter because I don't really have peers whom are going and have been through this. I've wanted to meet others but it's primarily over the internet which gets frustrating even. I don't feel like I have the community where other trans people do. It is the big tease. I am happy though to have met other trans people even though none in my demographic. The trans women I know are all old enough to be my mom or even grandma. I resent it because I did not have anyone I could have related and talked to as I started and now as I prep for surgery. I honestly am open in trans spaces for those who are starting so they may at least have someone to talk to where I didn't. I believe I can be that role model I never had and take honor in it should I meet someone else.

Amen Sis! I feel the same way myself. I understand for some stealth is a must based on where they live, but it hurts us all as a community for just the reason you gave. I told myself I would never even consider going stealth because I want to pay it forward like trans people did for us long ago to get us where we are today.  :)

I'm out and proud, and I live in Alabama, which is about as closed-minded a place as you'll find in America, at least. I've spent the better part of my life in a closet, terrified of what I was and how people would react. It was awful. You can bet I ain't letting no one put me back in that closet.

I can say that stealth is not for me but I live in a very liberal open minded city where I can be trans without having to worry about my safety or any serious social consequences.

However there are a lot of people living and/or working in parts of the world where they will get harassed, beaten, arrested and worse, can I really blame these girls for going stealth?

I totally agree, but for those like us in more accepting places I feel we should not be ashamed of openly being who we are.  :)

I don't feel ashamed because there is nothing to be ashamed of. I don't tell everyone but when it comes up I do. We are not a ->-bleeped-<-ing joke!

I hope you don't think I was saying you were Riley. What I meant is that those of us in the position to be able to educate should do it for those who can't, nothing else. :-\
