So I finally got a start date for testosterone (YAY!!!!!!!!  ) but I've been kind of concerned about a side effect of losing some of my hair. My father is bald. I know the gene comes from the mother's side, and her father had a full head of hair. I was just wondering how common it is. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

Congrats on your T date.

It's not just on the mother's side for trans men, since the gene is on the X chromosome and we get one from our mother and one from our father.

my hairs thinned  abit since i started T i think. my moms dad has hair but her brother is balding bad. which sucks if thats what im gonna end up having to deal with.

but there are options, just voice your concern to your doctor.

I have the exact same hairline as my brother now and he is thinning a bit, not loads but a bit around the temples. A lot of my uncles are completely bald so I'm keeping an eye on it I would very much prefer not to go bald but most men probably feel the same way so I try not to stress about it, future me can deal with it when/if it comes xD

(I'm Pre-T, though.. My mother's side of genetics in terms of hair isn't that bad, but my father's side.. ugh, everyone's bald or balding. It scares me a bit but oh well. :p At least I'll have my mother's side to count on.

Both my mom and brother have very thick hair that's fast growing. My dad however is starting to bald... I assume though I got my mother's genes thankfully as my hair is currently very thick :3.. It would be helpful to look at your siblings if you have any and the current state of your hair (thickness, fast growing etc)

Thank you all for the replies!! My sister has really thick, healthy hair. And every time i get my haircut the person cutting my hair underestimates how long it will take. i'm just kind of neurotic about it because my dad is bald.

This is interesting. I always saw cis-men having thoughts of aging when they get thinner hair and balding spots. When I started to thin out I hated it because my hair was so thick and made me look like a female. My friends thought that I disliked it because I was looking older but that's wasn't the case.

I'm interested in knowing why trans-men dislike getting thinner hair.

Thinner hair is a lot different from going bald.  Baldness, for the most part is seen as unattractive by many and they don't want to be unattractive.  Plus there's the part of baldness where you have one look, with hair, you can have multiple styles or cuts, with little to no hair there are very limited options.

Frankly I don't think there's a man (cis or trans) out there that looks forward to their hair thinning and eventual baldness.

Once you get to a certain point you either have to have that bald on top but i'm going to keep the hair on the sides look thats really rather unattractive or shave it and hope you don't look weird totally bald.  Men can't wear wigs or hair pieces of any sort without ridicule (while it is a more welcome option for women who don't like their hair or go bald).

Its just depressing.

To the OP... I don't know.  I wish I did.  My dad's balding... his dad was pretty much clean bald by the time he died at 94.. My mom's dad, however, had his hair his whole life (also to his 90s).  With two X's its hard to say... I don't think there could possibly have been much research in the area.  We should start a registry.  List maternal/paternal baldness characteristics as far back as you can go, your age, and your baldness status.  Over time there may be enough data to form a correlation of some sort.

My hair hasn't thinned at all. Still just as thick as always. I think my hair line changed though. I don't have balding on any side of my family with the men. My mother has really thin hair and is forever losing it, but I don't think that's genetic so much as lifestyle choices.

I concur wholeheartedly.  I honestly don't think there's been enough research on trans persons in general, much less transmen.  If such a group/organisation/study came up, I would definitely contribute.

I see so many guys getting wrapped up in this.  I understand not wanting to look "unattractive", but there is more to attractiveness than the hair on your head.

I've made my peace with it, but I was never really one of those guys who was like "OMG WHAT IF I GO BALD!?!!!" the ones who say they won't start T in case they might go bald.  I always just figured, if it happened it happened.  My hair is thinner on top but not anything I'd worry about yet. 

Going bald is pretty much my only fear.
I mean, I have almost no bald men in my family, so it shouldn't be a thing, but it is totally a thing for me.
But that's just me, because I have a thing for hair.

This. My family has absolutely no history of baldness so I'm not extremely worried but their hair has thinned a bit in the front but they all have a thick head of hair still in their late 50s. I love my thick hair and would love to be a medium-long haired man.

I'm really crossing my fingers on this one. My dad has a full head of hair.  His father was bald.  My grandfather on my mother's side and his son both had/have a full head of hair.  My brother is receeding quite a bit but my oldest brother isn't at all.  I'm thinking there's a pretty good chance that I'll be fine in this dept. but there is still a chance there will be problems.  I honestly don't think I'd look good bald.

I'm just over 3 years on T and my hair has been thinning right above my forehead in the middle. I was fine with the receding hairline but the thinning is frustrating. My barber recommended this product called Nioxin, it's about $30 for the kit but it actually work. I've been using it for the last few weeks and can definitely notice the difference. Just thought I'd pass the info along.

My hairline hasn't changed after 2.5ish years, but who knows. Almost all of the men and women on both sides have thick hair. My mom has thinning hair but she also put her body through the wringer so it's hard to judge where I'll be in a few years

I was paranoid about losing hair because my hairline changed when I started using T... little did I know it simply changed to a more masculine hairline and has kind of stopped after a few months. I chose to stop T for a half a year due to paranoia and did notice some baby hairs growing back at the front of my head.. but the reversal effects weren't worth being off T so I went back on again and everything seems fine now.. just some thinning hair but nothing too concerning (I'm also in my 20's).
