I haven't posted here in ages but...

I know one's name is a highly personal decision, and when it comes right down to it, well, I'm the one filling out the paperwork and handing over the cash so it will be made by me -- that said, there has been something I've been going back and forth on in my mind for a while now and some second opinions wouldn't hurt and might even help me sort my own thoughts better.

For some time now my decision had already been made: I was going to legally change my name to what I technically should have been named from the start (Noah George). A while back though I remembered a nickname I had years back, given to me and used by my "second family," that I had rather liked and after looking it up I like the name it's short for as well. I also like it with my name. Noah George Desmond [Last Name]

It would, in a way, sort of be like an homage to both of my families, so to speak, sort of a given name from my biological parents and my "second family." I also think it'd be a nice addition to my initials (NGDG vs. NGG).

That said, my name is already long enough. I mean, my surname alone is ten letters long...it's not as though I'll be writing out my full name all that often, and even then could probably get away with just using one middle name, but...still. Long name.

So...thoughts? Opinions?

I feel ridiculous posting this because I know it's a decision only I can make and it almost seems trivial in a way, but at the same time it's late and I feel like I just keep thinking circularly here so I'm just sort of figuring..."why not?"

You could make it  Noah George D [Last Name]

Taka

so you're getting three names. that's still one less than what my daughter got, and it didn't even cause problems with her passport. we also have a last name that is long enough.

A friend of mine had a kid, and that kid has legit like, 6 middle names.
And I had two middle names as my old name, and my brother has two middle names.
So I wouldn't worry so much about it, just go with what you like  :)

Yea, I think I more or less knew I was over-thinking this decision (a developed habit in an effort to avoid making any more big decisions poorly) -- I just needed a few more opinions from third parties to get my thoughts moving in a real direction.

I know there's plenty of people with more than one middle name (or even without a middle name), but I would be the only one in my immediate family with more than one which was another consideration that had crossed my mind; at the same time, however, hardly anyone in my life knows the middle name I was given at birth or the one I'm taking on as it is...so...and who knows, I might end up kicking myself if I don't add that second middle name on my name change forms because I do like it and I like the initials as well. Sort of like layering in a way: doesn't mean I always have to use them all.

Anyway...tomorrow I'll (finally) be filing for my name change. There's nothing holding me back and everything pushing me to get this done, not to mention I'm truly sick of seeing my birth name popping up. It's starting to interfere with my life.

Thanks for the input and the confirmation that there's no reason not to just do it, guys. Sometimes I need for it to be pointed out when I'm over-thinking things and there's no reason to do so. This was such an instances and I appreciate it (as frivolous as this thread may seem).
