Stephanie.  Many thanks for posting this. Good article   Thought provoking   Jenny Boylan is probably right in that until more of the general public personally know or have met a trans* person we will continue to be the object of inappropriate comment and characterisation.

I agree with this too. If the public is going to be educated, it will be us that do it. No one else is going to teach them what it means to be trans.
Have you read my short story The Eve of Triumph?

This is exactly why I'm not completely opposed to being an activist because our visibility is so minimal because almost everyone that transitions wants to be stealth, which is not helping them. If I was born to teach society something and have to be out and proud as an FTM in order to do so, so be it. If you want to achieve change, you have to sacrifice something for the greater good of humanity. My parents may be ashamed of what I am, even suggesting moving to another apartment while I transition, but I'm not.

honestly, this is a tough nut to crack. For me personally I find no benefit to be stealth. I'm older and have no problem with being trans. I understand others need to be invisible, but the reason for invisibility is the lack of understanding of us who are trans. The only way possible for change is through visibility. the disclosure vs. non disclosure issue is incredibly intense and its going to be hard to change. passing and non passing
