Won't the era of transhumanism substantially diminish t-gender discrimination?

Was thinking about the movie GATTACA and marveling at how medical science will eventually enable our body's to overcome human limitations.

Reading some reviews of the movie I came upon the word Transhumanism and an "aha!" moment brought me to Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transhumanism

I noticed this excerpt, "They speculate that human beings may eventually be able to transform themselves into beings with such greatly expanded abilities as to merit the label "posthuman".

So wouldn't that make us trailblazers and that we're 'posthuman' already? That we're already an accelerated form of evolution? Doesn't that seem awesome to you?

Actually with things being researched right now the future holds a bright hope. Ironically I don't really see transgender being the same as transhuman. Even in the next decade or 2 when transgender people might be able to fully function as their true gender we would still be human. What I mean by able to function as their true gender is right now they have genetically grown vagina's and they can transfer eggs from one woman to another right now, how long will it take to create an uterus that can be implanted.

The really exciting things on the horizon are things that will make people tranhuman. The British are working on contact lenses that give night vision if not trying to give the human eye the ability for low light vision. There are tests on mice using stem cells which extends their life by at least twofold. The biggest reason why if I should ever get out of my current position to one that is more conducive to transitioning I want to go ahead is it is one thing to live as a male for another 40 years but there is a possibility I might be able to live another 400 or more and that is far too long to live as a male.
With the fact that they are looking at a possibility of nanites keeping people forever young is there a chance that they can be programed to adjust people to their proper gender?

The stuff of science fiction is being developed now. But yes if the transgender community could be considered to be part of this progress then that would be exciting.

Very awesome Ev. The way you put it into words and from my own research I can myself postulate this will eventually one day come true. Transhumanism. I like it. Usually I hate "isms'" but this is a good one, possibly even a great one. I very much long for the day when discrimination in all forms are abolished from the human, or posthuman condition.

I too hold much hope for the future. Who knows, in the next 20 years medical science may have improved enough to as you say Rabbit, extend our lifespans by 100 or even 200 years. It will be a brave new world.

Would I like to be h+? It's likely than genetic engineering, prenatal hormone manipulation, invitro organ development. Advanced prosthetics will if not in my lifetime, then yours enable the transformation of people into something new.  Would I want to be a cyborg?  Grow a new XX body?

I don't know, I don't even know if it is desirable.  Given that opportunity will be class defined, what are the ethics?  Will the super rich become eternal?  Brings new meaning to hereditary wealth, if the generation just goes on and on.

I need to think some more.

If I could move my mind intact to an all new body would I do it? Absolutely. I've thought about this, being a lover of sci-fi all my life, and even written a few short stories of my own about it.

Not another label.

I am so tired of labels.

Labels lead to discrimination.

No it ok i will pass.

Between stem cells, cloning, gene therapy, and nanites, one day we will be able to get pregnant and have our own kids.

Religion will delay it as much as possible, but history has shown that progress can't be stopped. The next century will be unimaginable.

Count me out on that. I'm glad that I can't get pregnant.

Hold that thought
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postgenderism

"postgenderists believe that sex for reproductive purposes will either become obsolete, or that all post-gendered humans will have the ability, if they so choose, to both carry a pregnancy to term and 'father' a child, which, postgenderists believe, would have the effect of eliminating the need for definite genders in such a society."

I think it will lead to a new form of genocide in the long run. Think about the consequence of a new elite human species.

I hope that with new discoveries we can also learn tolerance. I hope that the archaic voices of hate vanish into irrelevancy where they belong.

Prof. Stephen Hawking predicted human aggression will be eliminated in our genes. That eventually a new, much highly intelligent race of human beings will evolve by our own hand and our priorities will change. Space exploration and what not. He also believes we will be biologically integrated with machines.

What that means for my dinky I have no idea. I won't even be alive.

But before any of that happens, you can be sure there will be riots and possibly wars being fought over this stuff.

^^ And here's the excerpt from one of his lectures about this:

"There is no time, to wait for Darwinian evolution, to make us more intelligent, and better natured. But we are now entering a new phase, of what might be called, self designed evolution, in which we will be able to change and improve our DNA. There is a project now on, to map the entire sequence of human DNA. It will cost a few billion dollars, but that is chicken feed, for a project of this importance. Once we have read the book of life, we will start writing in corrections. At first, these changes will be confined to the repair of genetic defects, like cystic fibrosis, and muscular dystrophy. These are controlled by single genes, and so are fairly easy to identify, and correct. Other qualities, such as intelligence, are probably controlled by a large number of genes. It will be much more difficult to find them, and work out the relations between them. Nevertheless, I am sure that during the next century, people will discover how to modify both intelligence, and instincts like aggression.

Laws will be passed, against genetic engineering with humans. But some people won't be able to resist the temptation, to improve human characteristics, such as size of memory, resistance to disease, and length of life. Once such super humans appear, there are going to be major political problems, with the unimproved humans, who won't be able to compete. Presumably, they will die out, or become unimportant. Instead, there will be a race of self-designing beings, who are improving themselves at an ever-increasing rate.

If this race manages to redesign itself, to reduce or eliminate the risk of self-destruction, it will probably spread out, and colonise other planets and stars. However, long distance space travel, will be difficult for chemically based life forms, like DNA. The natural lifetime for such beings is short, compared to the travel time. According to the theory of relativity, nothing can travel faster than light. So the round trip to the nearest star would take at least 8 years, and to the centre of the galaxy, about a hundred thousand years. In science fiction, they overcome this difficulty, by space warps, or travel through extra dimensions. But I don't think these will ever be possible, no matter how intelligent life becomes. In the theory of relativity, if one can travel faster than light, one can also travel back in time. This would lead to problems with people going back, and changing the past. One would also expect to have seen large numbers of tourists from the future, curious to look at our quaint, old-fashioned ways."

This was something a friend said when we talked about what it was like to transform ones body and face in such a fast period.  He said it was like my life was science fiction and that we are the first transhumans, and foreshadow the coming of post humans.

Sign me up- post humanity here I come.  Because once you beat evolution, the only way on is by design.

Body... meet brain.  Now follow her lead and there will be no more trouble, you dig?

I agree sign me up, ^^___^^ I'm more than ready. I also agree that we could be the prelude to the first transhumans. I just hope we get there without destroying ourselves.

I am very much a fan of capitalism, and also the expanding of new ideas.  People being able to live forever and money being what perpetuates it will kill both of these.  The political, social, and economical environment would become a stagnant pool of a select few individual's ideas.  The ability to have an eternity to "perfect" and enforce their ideas would be their ticket to complete power.

To be able to have this technology for medical purposes? Awesome to be alive at a time to watch these things beginning to happen.  This goes the same for treating (medically) the transgender community.

It is an interesting thought to connect this and think of medically transitioning people as a medical technology step in the right direction.  We do take for granted what didn't exist for our grandparents.

I didn't answer the topic question...  hehe, oopsie.  An era of transhumanism probably would distract the public from discriminating against any of the minorities of our society.  The ability of people to be anything that they wanted to be would open up so many new groups of people that the discrimination would get spread thin and diluted.

People tend to be like sheep though also.  This could lead us to the opposite; everyone fitting one type of person (i.e. people following celebrities).  A streamlining of how people look and act would make any perceived outlyers stand out further.  Maybe being "H+" could help us not be an outlyer in any perceptible way, even by medical professionals.

I like what-ifs too darn much.  This is hurting my head.
