Sir Real

Does anyone know what the waits are like for top surgery through CAMH? And is that the only way to get top surgery covered in Ontario?

As an MTF I can't say for sure but last I heard (2 weeks ago) the waiting list just go get a consultation for any gender related things was 18 months, at times I've heard it was as much as 3 years.

Ya the great government controlled health care for GD clients.

Would suggest get in line fast as you can.

That really sucks.  I don't know how I could wait that long.  I'm hoping my endo is able to figure something out...

Well CAMH is only required for SRS/GRS and most surgeons require at least 1 year of hormones / full time RLE so in the end it does not really matter much if you just get on the wait list as soon as possible.

Yes the wait list for CAMH is extremely long. I got referred to them like 3 years ago and still haven't gotten approved for surgery. Get on the list ASAP.

Dude, that's BRUTAL.  Just wow.  I might just try and save up for it if it's going to be like that...

Interesting, so do you mean top surgery is not required to go through CAMH?

people go the CAMH route because it is the only way to get top surgery/bottom surgery/hysto, etc. covered by ohip. if you don't mind paying out of pocket for these things, you can just go to a surgeon who does top surgery (like dr.mclean in toronto) but of course, they have their own requirements.

I got my top surgery without CAMH and paid. Dr. McLean did my top surgery and honestly I don't recall him having many requirements to get it done, if any at all lol. He does a very good job btw.

i know but some surgeons do have requirements. i'm going through CAMH and have my surgery approval appointment on friday. i know dr. mclean isn't covered by ohip which sucks because i've seen his work and it is really good (and closer). if i had the money i would have went to dr. mclean instead of needing to go through camh, that's for sure.

Yeah, I know some others do. I was just mentioning he didn't because he is the closest one to Toronto that I know of. And that's awesome that you're going to get approved! I am still waiting to get approved for bottom surgery. :'( Hoping for next summer to be approved. Even though I showed them proof that I worked for over 1 year living as male (pay cheques!, name change documents from like 3 years ago!! EVERYTHING!!) , they still don't believe me or something lol. I HATE CAMH!

I second this. I went to McLean as well... it was super simple. He'll ask you a couple of questions relating to your gender identity during the first meeting and you're basically good to go afterwards. The only document I needed to send over was a letter from my GP that I was healthy enough to go through surgery.

Hey - my friend just got his surgery approved (he went through CAMH).. you gotta have it done with Dr. Brassard though. It took around a year to get it approved...

Let me know if you have any questions (I can ask him!).

That would be so so amazing.  I'm wondering how long it took for him from referral to approval? Or is that what the year was?  Also wondering how long he has to wait to actually get the surgery?
