U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today applauded the U.S. Senate's action in passing an amendment to the Defense Authorization bill aimed at improving the federal hate crime laws by expanding the definition of a hate crime to include those crimes motivated by gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and disability.

The current federal hate crime law only covers crimes motivated by bias on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin.
