Coming out to my Christian Mother?

Once I decide to come out to my Christian mom, how can I explain that being transgender is not a choice or sin against God? I am certain that she will reject or try to change me, claiming that being transgender is "not real or natural." She will say that I have to turn from sin, but I feel like I am dying every day I spend as a guy. How can I explain to her that being transgender is natural -not sinful- and that the Bible is not opposed to it?

Some will not except it at all especially when G-D is telling them it is wrong. Just have patience, respect and compassion with her when explaining. I would not expect a bad response automatically, but be prepared for it. It has been my experience that as people age things get more accepting because of their life's experience's. I certainly hope it goes well for you and keep us posted. If you have a bad experience you will have a lot of support here to help deal with it. Good luck!  :)

My mother is a Christian but actually took it fairly well at the time and continues to do so. For her the focus of her faith is in love and acceptance and a belief that things happen for a reason. I would have thought these were some central tenants of Christianity although quite a lot of Christians don't see it that way it would seem. She's in her 70s and has been a long time coming to that position but it is pretty awesome. Maybe before you come out to your mother soften her up for a few weeks beforehand with some discussion about the love and acceptance passages from the bible.

What a wonderful idea, Grace! I had not even considered easing her into it by appealing to the acceptance that Jesus promotes in the Bible. Only the Old Testament contains anything that could be used against trans* people; the New Testament is all about love and acceptance. I will mention the belief that Jesus' death nullified the laws of the Old Testament. Thank you Jessica and Grace for your responses!

There is a book called "The transsexual and the cross" written by katie Leone - it is available on Amazon. It is a short read and it might help with the discussion you are having with your mom.

My own Christian parents seemed to accept me at first but I guess they are having second thoughts now. I have a copy of that book that I am preparing to send to them soon.
