Gay Americans will go without workplace rights or other legal protections because of the trans-or-bust strategy on ENDA.

...

Make no mistake about the long-term effect of the "trans-jacking" of not just ENDA, but the whole movement. ENDA and hate crimes have always been at the top of the long and growing list of gay rights bills in Congress. So long as energy is spent on a trans-inclusive ENDA, then Congress has all the cover it needs to do nothing about more politically sensitive votes on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" or federal recognition of same-sex couples.

Oh boy, here comes the backlash.  ::)
Here's what I find about compromise--
don't do it if it hurts inside,
'cause either way you're screwed,
eventually you'll find
you may as well feel good;
you may as well have some pride

The "Dammit! I demand the right to marry my partner" gambit coupled with "but unlike them, most of us are straight in every other way" whine.

Unity takes it in the solar plexus...

Don't read Chris Crain as representative of all gay people.  I remember when he was with Southern Voice and he is NOT trans friendly.  When it comes to trans people, he hates us almost as much as Republikans do.

Oh he doesnt "Hate" us he just wants to make sure that the gay man gets "equality", but rest assured that "equality" is not something transgenderd persons have any right to.

its all very logical, in his twisted way

with friends like this who needs .....

OK, but the fact that the SF Bay Times would use the term "Trans-Jacked" in the headline of that story is really offensive. i think that the paper should offer an apology and a retraction.

Ell, I agree.  But Chris has been whining and whimpering and crying and bitching about this same thing for years.  Ever since someone first proposed adding trans to ENDA.  From him, it's nothing new at all.  In fact, I think this column is just a rewrite of one he wrote several years ago in Southern Voice.  And SoVo is very trans friendly.

this is an update of his August 2004 editorial "ENDA gets Trans-Jacked"

At the time he was editor of The Washington Blade and it was written to express his disappointment at the HRC decision to support an trans-inclusive enda bill.

That ended up in Southern Voice as it is published by the same owner/publisher Window-Media the nation's largest gay newspaper group.

As near as i can tell chris belives that gay rights should come first and formost. if it does not benifit him directly then it should be put on the back burner, so not get in the way of his rights.

I believe that chris came up with the term "trans-jacked"

Kate, I'm thinking even further back when he was the editor of SoVo.  When HRC was still openly resisting any trans inclusion but other groups like NGLTF were beginning to lobby for inclusion.  But then maybe at my age I'm just getting time frames confused and it was the article you linked to.  LOL
