A former top 40 radio DJ has announced he is undergoing surgery to become a woman.
Capital FM Yorkshire presenter, Simon Hirst, 39, has revealed in an interview that she is now called Stephanie, and is halfway through gender reassignment treatment.

The well-liked DJ left Hirsty's Daily Dose breakfast show in June.
Now, in an interview with Stephen Nolan on BBC Radio 5 Live, Hirst revealed she had made the decision to become a woman because she 'doesn't want to hide anymore.'

'There were many times on the air in recent years where I nearly said that I'm transgender,' she said.
'I knew from around the same time that I knew I wanted to be on the radio that something wasn't right.
'I didn't feel complete, I didn't feel like it locked. I felt like a square peg in a round hole but I didn't know why and I couldn't work it out.'
Hirst, who also hosted the Hit40UK national commercial radio Top 40 chart between 2003 and 2006, took the decision to leave the popular breakfast show because 'I got to the point in my life where I had to stop doing what I was doing to have some time out to focus on me, because I have devoted my entire life to radio'.

My favourite line in the article is this...

Just... what?

she will become a woman because he 'doesn't want to hide anymore'... How did that make sense in the mind of the person who wrote it?

It's the frickin' Daily Wail, the paper that in the 30s had a headline "Hurrah for the blackshirts" - they have form in being scum, I am afraid.

A friend pointed out that they may have done it deliberately to make us sound confused.

Stephanie is extremely articulate and I feel the interview is well handled. As most of us may feel, it could be me telling my life story too.

I used to listen to her breakfast radio show when she was a local radio DJ in my neck of the woods.

I am happy for her, for finally wanting to realise herself, and wish her all the best in her transition, and future.

Nothing is better for our community than when well-regarded, high-profile people come out as transgender and then articulately explain what they're going through.
