I recorded me reading some random stuff to see what my voice would sound like trying to be deeper.

I know I sound crap now, but can you tell me where I am going wrong/how to sound better. Like a teenage boy. Thanks.

Frankly "young boy" would've been my first guess anyway. You already have one important factor down: not using that feminine vocal upswing at the end of sentences? That makes it sound like a question?
Also good: you're not dipping into vocal fry to try to force your voice deeper. That's to be avoided for a few reasons.
1. It's more commonly done by girls and women
2. It's bad for the vocal cords.
3. It often ends up sounding like the equivalent of someone with a deep voice trying to raise it, only sounding falsetto instead.

I don't know if this app would work pre-T, but it looks fairly useful. I'm not sure why not. Eva M Breathe and Eva M Pitch. They are each $5 and are for iPhone (iPad) and Android. This is done by a speech therapist and unlike a lot of stuff I have seen won't hurt your vocal cords.

You sound like Alex Bertie (who is pre-T) however you do have a male speech pattern which is great. My 1st impression was young boy as well.

If you hadn't said anything I would say young boy. So you do have a passable voice in my opinion. However idk how men sound with your accent so can't help you much in the department.

I just found an app for my phone, Pitch Detector, which seems to work pretty well.  Nice to know I'm in the ambiguous/male range but I still get ma'amed on the phone. Time to work on inflection/sentence structure, etc

Over the phone is more difficult because there are fewer social cues to tell the other person "male". In person, pre-T we have haircut, clothing, posture/body language, binding and packing to work with in addition to voice and speech patterns. Over the phone we have perhaps four things depending on the phone call. Voice, speech pattern, name (if it comes up during the course of the call), and nature of the call itself.

Factoring in all this crap, most people don't expect a young boy to be scheduling his own doctor's appointments, checking in with his bank, etc. so on the phone androgynous to young male range is more likely to get pegged as "female" than in person.

I don't know if people around here aren't trained to use sir and ma'am on the phone anymore, or if they're trained (jubilation!) to refrain from "guessing" if it's not clear, or what, but these days I don't get either on the phone unless the context has made it clear. Calling a doctor's office where they know me as Mr. ___, it's sir and Mr. ___. Calling elsewhere, it's no honorific.

Good point about the phone calls and appts etc.

Thanks guys. I sound like a monotonous robot but I suppose its something that'll get better with time when I get more used to speaking like this.

I don't know who Alex Bertie is but I'm hoping its good I sound like him?

And I am a teenage boy so I suppose it wouldn't be weird for me to sound like one haha.

I thought I posted re: Eva M Pitch and Eva M Breathe for Android and iPhone. Each are $5. They are meant for trans guys on T, but not sure why not for pre-T. They look pretty good (I've played with a bit) and designed by a speech therapist.

I'm really interested in this, since I have been told that, after top surgery, I might pass without T. I have been told my voice is pretty deep as it is. However, I work a a drive-thru and customers often say "ma'am" to me. So I'm wondering why there's a contradiction there...
I can't listen to your recording right now since I'm at work, but I'll listen when I get home....

I still get Ma'am on the phone a lot.  I had to make a gazillion calls last week and got Ma'am'ed several times.  At one point the person asked me, Who is Jay?  I said, me.  Then they started calling me sir.   ::)

Mostly I ignore it, but if they keep it up I correct them.

Yeah, I still hate my voice, 6.5 years later...

I found a channel created by a voice coach who teaches you how to deepen your voice with vocal exercises. His name is Jay Miller. He has some speech exercises in his videos too. The channel was probably not made with transmen in mind, but I think they're useful for anybody.
