When did you cull or ditch the boy side of the wardrobe?

This evening I had a wonderful moment. I savagely culled the boy side of my wardrobe. In order for an item of clothing to make it through the culling it must either;

  • Be an absolutely necessary piece of clothing required to earn a living; or
  • Be an Androgynous piece of clothing

I did not even go near the girl side of my wardrobe so it goes without saying that every item there survived.

So let's just say it was a very nice feeling, and my wardrobe space has multiplied beyond belief, that 'man' was certainly hoarding clothes I tell you. So tomorrow there will be a trip to the charity store where they will find a new home.

So my question is, do you recall the moment when you culled the boys side of the wardrobe and how did you go about doing it?

Ah yes that was great moment. 3 weeks after going full time (and not getting clocked) I realized that I needed to get rid of all those old male clothes that I would never wear again. I did give some to my younger brother (suits and things). After donating them to charity I felt so empowered and free. It was the 2nd best feeling to getting my name and gender changes on my driver's license.

In 2002 I jumped head in.

Bought all new clothes, got rid of all male clothes.

I saved precisely one piece of male clothing. My favourite tie was marked with a note on its back with my transition date.

I still have it to remind me of the day I put on my breast forms a nice blouse and a skirt and said farewell to the bally male life.

Isnt it just an amazing moment. I'm not yet full time but I've seriously had enough of this male bu!l$h!t and just had to do away with anyway that screamed 'I'm a man'. Oh except the suits and shirts which obviously fall into condition 1) earning an income.

That's a really nice thing Kami, you know I after ditching all my ties I came across a bow tie, I think I wore it once to a wedding. This is one item that nearly made it through, I thought it met the 2) Androgynous condition. But I decided to throw that to. Let me sleep on this thought, I may wake in the morning and sa or some lasting memory, or I may just siphon the fuel out of my car and burn the lot!  :eusa_clap:

Thanks Melissa Ann, don't worry I'm only 4.5 months into transition and Dressing as this boy has just done my head in. When I must dress as him in a casual setting, it's androgynous only, work of course I'm going to have to bite the bullet and dress appropriately in shirted trousers, no tie luckily.

Interestingly enough, while I have got rid of some of the stuff (not all at once I would be going thru clothes and think I am never gonna wear this again and toss the offending item) I find lots of my male wardrobe gets incorporated into my new life.

Like I have this hoodie from Old Navy and it looks fine on me as a girl, I have an old M-65 field jacket from the Vietnam era that was always too big on me but it goes surprisingly well with some of my outfits. I find things like Tripp NYC bondage pants are basically the same thing male or female, so I kept those for goth nights at the club. I even kept my old sneakers which I now use when I mow the lawn or weed wack as I dont care about them. Also my band shirts tend to be oversized a bit now on my but lots of times I will put them on when I am being lazy around the house or when I am working out.

I was expecting to just toss everything but, in the end I suppose I just hate feeling wasteful. Still there are lots of things I did toss because no way was I ever gonna wear some of the stuff as a woman.

I had some clothes that fell into the condition 2) Androgynous which did make it through. But you have me thinking Hikari, I mean was I really thinking outside the square when I've ditched ALL of these clothesl. I've got some really expensive smart casual jackets which I thought about, but I'm just struggling to see how I could incorporate it. Maybe another point I need to sleep on.

I totally agree with not wanting to be wasteful. I'm the same, but I considered what I could do with them, either a) sow them into a large patchwork quilt for me and the children, or b) give them to someone who needs them. I decided b) is best as they're not making me happy at all anymore  :icon_sniff:

Over a period of a little over a month I gradually got rid of all of it. Those items that could pass as female clothes stayed the longest. I let my brother have what remained when I went full time. I haven't looked back since.

I know the feeling. The last time I had worn a tie was over 10 years ago. I never did learn how to tie one.

I'm never going to get rid of all of it. In fact some I'll keep as they were gifts. But for now I'm not really buying any new boy clothes. Just girl clothes.

My wardrobe was pretty androgynous so I kept a fair bit, I also adapted stuff by making t-shirt dresses and things like that.

I'm honestly surprised that I haven't done this yet.  I have a dresser with all my 'boy' clothes in the bottom 3 drawers and all my normal girl clothes in the top 3 and my closet.  I have not worn male clothing in about 8 years.  Except for a few andro style shirts here and there.  I've always worn girl clothes most of my life as my daily wear, and nobody has said anything about it.  So even 8 months into transition, I don't feel that I look differently then any other time while out in public.  Well except for dresses and skirts.  I've only been out in a dress once so far.  So I guess I could go ahead and throw out the male clothes, since they never ever get worn.

Got rid of suits, ties, men's dress shirts, office casual and wingtips back in 2001 when I retired from the workforce. I do have some men's tapered fit casual shirts I love to wear partially unbuttoned with a bra on occasions and men's skinny jeans that I wear mixed in andro mode. I enjoy raising eyebrows unlike so many of you others. I am preeminently into women's tops jeans and women's unisex footwear as I have narrow feet and women's medium corresponds to a men's C width which is perfect.

I'm surprised I haven't done this to my "grown up" clothes a while back. Apart from a pair or two of black pants that I need if pending on a venues uniform. (Ladies pants fit so much better, yet there is nowhere I can put my work key).

My casual tops are all geeky and I'm starting to like how some of my old boys tops are fitting me now. I have some space at the moment so I'll have to have a look at them again in a few months. Try them on and see what I think then

Yep. Right when I decided I was ready to go full time I took out all but a pair of pants and a couple shirts. They were sort of my emergency stash but so far I haven't needed them. And I'm sure I'll need to pair down my girl clothes at the rate I'm aquiring them. Still. It was an awesome day.

I am a weird girl, I like video games and skirts, swords and nail polish, sharks and black lace...not sure if that's normal, definitely sure that I don't care. =P

Dont know exactly when I did but I kept certain things since I really loved the prints on some of my old shirts so I'm gonna convert them into tank tops. There's a bunch of tutorials on youtube that shows you how to modify guy clothes to female clothing. Like taking a guy shirt and turning it into a simple dress if its large enough.

It's a great option if you're trying to save cash and update your wardrobe!  :)

The week after I went FT, I took the lot to the Goodwill store. I made damn sure I burnt every bridge - no going back in anyway

For me it was when I returned after FFS and saw the Girl in the mirror at home for the first time.  I was then ready to make space for her.

I gave as much as I could as gifts to my ex-boyfriends.  I'm a clothes nut, so they got some pretty and elegant stuff.  And now, whenever I meet up with M., he's wearing one of my shirts.  It was a very strange and positive experience to not just give away stuff, but to give it to these men who continue to be important in my life.

Still have 10 suits I need to get rid of...
