Hello ladies,

I'm growing my hair long for the first time and it can be very frizzy and unmanageable so I'm having a bit of a hard time figuring out what to do with it. Plus it's at a bit of an awkward length where it's flat in some places and sticks out in weird other places so it needs a bit of sculpting, usually with curlers. I use shampoo and conditioner with natural oils and I use anti-frizz serum and leave-in conditioner after I shower. I use a diffuser when I blow dry my hair but maybe I'm not using it right or my blower sucks coz it just frizzes up and makes a mess? I have to put on some mousse and/ or take the time to put my hair in curlers for a while to prevent frizzing. I also use hairspray to keep my bangs in place and to make it a bit more wind proof (it's pretty windy where I live). Btw I don't usually have time to air dry. That'd take forever in Canada, especially at this time of year.

Now what I need help with is figuring out if there's a better way to manage my hair without using so much mousse and hairspray? Because I feel like I need to shampoo it every time that I use product coz wouldn't it be bad for my hair if I didn't shampoo it out? But it's bad to shampoo hair too often because it makes it frizzy, right? Then I need more product... and then more shampoo! You see the problem here?

Also, how do you girls style your hair? Coz putting in curlers to combat flatness and frizz is pretty time consuming so I'm looking for alternative methods. Combing just seems to make everything frizz up.

So, anyone got any solutions please? Tbh I'm a total hair noob. I wonder if there's a way to keep my hair frizz-free, volumized and the bangs in place (maybe even slightly wind resistant?) without heavy product that needs to be shampooed out all the time? Are there more gentle healthy products that I could use? Or is there a better way to get the product out without stripping my hair and scalp of it's natural oils?

I would recommend argan oil. It's very good for hair and can help with styling.

Every woman needs to learn how to manage her own hair. And it changes too, just when you think you have it figured out :P.

Something I use to help manage my head of frizz is coconut oil. My hair can be totally alien without it.

Don't use much, just enough to oil your hands slightly and then rub through. Works really well, and as natural as can be :).

Also, avoid excess washing and conditioner, it can strip good things out.

Maybe not your style, but I wore a cap until I could tie it back or pull it through the adjuster hole the back.now it's at the bottom of my shoulder blades.

It's normal when first growing hair longer for it to be difficult to manage. It's because of the direction of grow of the hair when it's short. After it's been long for awhile it will begin to lay more flat and be easier to manage. This can take a year or so, though.

To me, it seems like doing less to the hair works better than doing more (as you seem to be doing). I would suggest simply not shampooing as often, for one thing. Every day, brush the hair from the roots to the ends with a good quality bristle brush. Hair dryers dry the hair out and contribute the the frizziness. Look for a way to minimize that. I've even been known to just wear a headband, pony or braid until it dried, but you get the idea.

The main thing is to treat your hair gently while it grows longer and it will become more manageable. The less you do to it the better in the long run.

This ^
I use argan oil and what a difference it makes! It's much smoother, softer, easier to straighten and easier to style.

Tresume Keratin Smooth Conditioner.  I absolutely swear by the stuff :)  Rather counter-intuitively, it's so good I actually have to combine it with one of their volumising shampoos otherwise my hair goes from frizzy to lank lol :P

With the styling, here's what I tend to do:

  • Dry the hair using hairdryer and fingers
  • Use ceramic brush (like this one) to push and flatten each side of my hair to the opposite side while applying heat, then cooling it while keeping it tight to help it settle.  This helps smooth it down while also giving it that "up and out" shape
  • Brush the hair back (again with the ceramic) while applying heat
  • Roll sections of hair around the brush, pin it with the hair dryer, and pull out and away from head to straighten and smooth it out.  Start at the bottom / underneath parts and work your way up on each side.  Again, this helps give it lift (preventing it looking lifeless) without the frizz
  • Cool it all off and give it chance to settle.  That's pretty much it unless you want to add any holding products like hair spray etc :)

This works for me, so it might be worth a go.  It probably sounds a lot more complex than it really is though :)  I keep meaning to get hold of some heat protection products but life is busy lol :P ♥︎

Try hair masks before washing your hair or when you go to sleep... I like to put just olive oil on my hair before washing them and they are not dry nor frizzy as much as they would have been without it... Besides that yeah argan or moroccan oil is really good...This to use headbands and other things but nothing that is too small or might cause extra breakage. Good luck!
