I am Christian and transgender. God knew who we were even before we were born. God has used all kinds of folks to progress the kingdom of God. One of the blessed moments of my life was coming out at my place of worship. I was received with open arms. It disturbs me that many wonderful and productive Christians were thrown out of their churches by some so-called well meaning Christians because they were perceived as defective, deceived and sinful. I could talk a week about this but that another story.

I spoke at a transgender 101 lesson about what it is to be transgender. Did a study on Deut. 22:5 several years ago. Nowhere does it say that transgender people are defective. Christians are instructed to share the gospel, not judge anyone because they may be what we think a Christian is suppose to be or look like.

Deut 23:1 A person may squeeze hard or cut off the sex parts of a man. The man with the physical damage cannot go to the LORD's house.

When I was 11yo, I had an accident on my bike, a 1-speed bike.  A tree root was sticking out of the ground, the bike instantly stopped.  Kinetic energy (the bad E, not the good E ;) ) took over and slammed my midsection into that dreadful "L" shaped bracket (which we all know, should NEVER be on a boy's bike).  I was in severe pain for a few days as my left testacle was heavily bruised.

Even to this day, when the nerves flare up, it's 8 out of 10 on the pain scale as those damaged nerves and lower portion of that testacle remind me of that painful day all over again. It doesn't flare up every day or even every few weeks, but still it does, it's not fun. Yes, it makes my eyes water when it happens.

I forgot to tell my urologist of this before my vas surgery years ago.  Yeah, when I yiped, he freaked.  I can laugh about it now, but a decade ago, that was excrutiating.

All this is said to bring the point home from Deut 23:1—since I am damaged in the reproductive area, I am not allowed in any church because "The man with the physical damage cannot go to the LORD's house."

Now, if the institutional church actually followed Deuterononmy's laws, I would have never been allowed in church, ever.

If thee Lord's decrees need to be followed, all of them, why does the box/institutional church pick & choose which laws from Deuteronomy to administer and which ones to ignore?

Doctrine and 'ranting' aside, there's been some serious freedom had today in all this...

You see, finally getting past Deuteronomy 22 onto Deut 23 was a key revelation for me.  While the church ignores the law of Deut 23:1 God gave me revelation and freedom in it...

You see, there's been this nagging self-doubt of crossdressing deep inside my soul, that If Deut 22:5 is truly an abomination to God, then I would be a sinner by engaging in it.  Yet this conflicts with being saved by grace.

A trans friend of mine told me that she had the "aha!" moment when she realized that crossdressing isnt bad.  I marinated on her story a lot.  A whole lot recently.  But I figured some people take a lot more time to come around to things in their transition.  And so it was to be with me regarding female clothing.  The horrific guilt/shame of my CD'ing past was like a dark cloud over me and would take quite some time to sort out.  But...

Then today, the revelation hit me:  You could have NEVER entered into the Lord's house as you have damaged reproductive goods.  Ever. (Deut 23:1)  You're saved by the grace of God as a Gentile, go live your life in Him with much greater freedom.  Your clothes...you are saved by grace no matter what you wear.  You're free to run in the wide open pasture of His love, His mercy, His freedom, as 'you'.

Oh my!  I felt the weight lift off me and an excitement regarding this area of my life that was long held back (damaged?) by the terrible guilt/shame from CD'ing days past.

FREE AT LAST!

So I emailed my transgendered friend and asked her when we can go shopping!  I'm sooooo estatic!!  This is HUGE!

Now I'm sure some of the stiff-necked will read this and say "God didn't free you from your sin, he gave you over to it since you were insistent on sinning! REPENT!"

Ha, too bad for you.  I'm enjoying this new found lightness of the spirit and revealtion.  It's been 19 years since the binge/guilt-shame/purge cycle ended, yet it's been that long hovering over my soul.  NO LONGER!  IT'S GONE!  GONE!!!!!!

HAPPY DANCE!  Thank you Lord!

What many Christians, especially of the conservative persuasion, tend to forget, is that Deuteronomy (and indeed all the laws in the Pentateuch except the Ten Commandments and the commandments given to Noah) describes the national law of the tribes of Israel, and as such many of them are not even binding for modern, Orthodox Jews. Many of these laws were religious in nature, but many were also purely of what we today would call a "secular" nature; they were intended to make society function. And at the time, they were unusually humane, compared to surrounding cultures.

Whether these laws were given directly by God, or by men who were divinely inspired, or made in another way, is not really important. The important thing is what the Apostles decreed when Gentiles started to become Christians:

Quote from: The Apostles (Acts 15:28-29)It is the decision of the holy Spirit and of us not to place on you any burden beyond these necessities, namely, to abstain from meat sacrificed to idols, from blood, from meats of strangled animals, and from unlawful marriage. If you keep free of these, you will be doing what is right. Farewell.

It is also commonly held that what was said about food in this passage was not because there would be any sin involved in eating them (St. Paul confirms this), but because Jewish Christians would have difficulties accepting their new brethren if Gentile Christians ate sacrificial meat, blood and so on. Because of this, the later Church did not hold believers to these dietary laws.

To sum up, according to the Apostles themselves, the Jewish law does not bind Christians. Deuteronomy is completely irrelevant to Christian moral teaching. So if I ever meet a Christian who slings verses from Deuteronomy to condemn me, I will tell them they'll have to find something better than that to justify their view.

I will also ask them if they believe I as a Christian should:

  • Make sure not to take the mother bird if I ever steal eggs from a nest. (Deut. 22:6-7)
  • Put a parapet on my roof if I ever build a house. (Deut. 22:8 )
  • Never mix seeds if I ever plant a vineyard. (Deut. 22:9)
  • Never plow with an ox and a donkey harnessed together. (Deut. 22:10)
  • Never wear cloth made by a mix of wool and linen. (Deut. 22:11)
  • Put tassels on the corners of my coat. (Deut. 22:12)

Obviously, if Deut. 22:5 is the eternal and unchanging commandment of God, then so is Deut. 22:11. Yet, I see quite an amount of Christians wearing mixed-textile clothing without much scruples. This kind of cherry picking is irrational and not least un-Christian.

Today my daughter whispers to me "Dad, I have Jimmy's (her brother's) sweatshirt on, it's so comfy!"   I laughed.  I said "Jimmy, guess who's sweatshirt your sister has on?"

My daughter looked at me and said "Dad, don't tell him!"

I said, I did that for a reason.

Some other day, when we do a family bible study on Deut 22:5, I will bring this example up.  I guess my daughter is now an abomination to God for wearing her brother's sweatshirt

Please forgive me for finding this particular line of reasoning absurd.  How can you "gender" a frigging sweatshirt????

When one carries the belief that I am an abomination due to me breaking the rules of Deut 22:5 by wearing women's clothes (such as my inlays), then it stands to reason the other way is also fair game for such backwards logic.

It's completely backwards thinking...if me as a 'guy' is an abomination by wearing women's attire,  then my daughter must be an abomination as she broke the law of Deut 22:5

I agree...."logic", ackbasswards for sure.  Those pesky sweatshirts.  You had better make sure they are "gendered" correctly before you go out shopping!  You don't want to inadvertently pick up any "abominations'. ::)
