So, how many of you are with Tricare / CHAMPUS medical insurance? It's military only. My dad retired from the military so that's my medical care provider. It's pretty awesome, not gonna lie. I only co-pay $12 to see my endocrinologist at the city's Children's Hospital. I also get my hormones for free. Pretty great, but I'm curious as to what other benefits I'll get? Like, if it will cover my SRS or Breast Aug? Also, are there any medical insurance that cover anything pertaining to FFS? These are all usually necessary steps for any trans person & if my medical insurance happens to cover ANY of these extras I would die of happiness because they're all so crucial & it makes me sad that the only way I may be able to afford any of them as soon as I want them would be to escort or something along those lines.

I was on Champus tell I turned 21. My dad retired from the military too. My mom, who I take care of still is on Champus. They have a ton of exclusions. I wouldn't expect that they cover anything they consider cosmetic. The only way you will know for sure is to call them. As I recall Champus was pretty much the bottom level of what is availale through Tricare and since your dad and you are not active military it even has more exclusions. Call them is the best policy. Sorry that I couldn't be of more help.

Unfortunately, when I was medically separated from the military, I did not get a retirement. My disability rating wasn't high enough. So I don't get Tricare, but the VA does cover all my medical care like insurance would, just no co-pays or deductibles , I just have to go to the clinic to be seen. The VA hospitals are very good and it's only ~90 minutes away for anything big. And if they can't do something they will refer me to an outside provider and cover that as well. And a big plus is that they cover, except any surgeries, all the related care for GD, including pre-op testing and post-op care and prescriptions. So I'm very happy about that. And with the court riling on Medicare recently, I'm hoping that there will be a change in policy to cover surgeries as well before too much longer.

I was just medically retired and was offered tricare but upgraded to tricare prime because I'll be seeing therapists probably every couple weeks if not every week and prime has no co pay but you pay quarterly. I did my research while I was still in currently they'll only cover therapists and hormone related care. They'll cover surgery for patients with a pre existing condition which I interpreted as being intersex.

Basically, no procedures related to "sex change" are covered by TRICARE unless, "Only if gender confusion is documented from birth".

However, mental health is covered so it will pay for the therapist with a copay.
