Whenever that comes up in a conversation I have with a girl/guy that I'm romantically involved with, I tell them "I would punch a wall and hurt myself before I hurt you, if I ever got that mad."  I was raised in an abusive household (me and my mom have experienced it for the past 18 years), and just recently escaped from him (my father), and are living happily on our own.  I would NEVER put my hands on a woman, or man, for that matter, in the way he has with us.  I refuse to be like him.  I do not believe in abuse in any way, shape, or form, and abuse comes in more than just physical violence.  Tell her something like that.  My "I would hurt myself before I hurt you" seems to usually work well.

Oh yes of course, I just meant that that's what my train of thought would be and that's how I would handle the situation. I don't feel comfortable just asking for forgiveness, I feel like I have to earn it. And I guess I extend that to others who have hurt me as well. They have to earn my trust back.
