Binder too small

Sir Real

Hey guys. I was pretty desperate for new binders, so I saved up (or rather sold things I didn't want to) and was able to get 2 binders from Underworks, this one: http://www.underworks.com/product/productinfo/cotton-concealer-tank-top/314?cid=4
My chest is 30" so I got XS. Only 2 problems.  1) They came and were way too small for me.  2) I live in Canada.  Which means no exchange and stupid expensive shipping and exchange rates.  If I returned them for a S I could have bought 2, maybe 3 more binders (not exaggerating) for the same price I'd have paid total if I were in the US.  *sigh* Because I have money to throw into the fireplace after shredding it into confetti.
Anyways, all complaining aside lol.  The white binder I got was about 2.5" more material around than the black one.  I soaked it with water and stretched it over the back of a chair 'till dry 2x and it's good now.  Black one I did the same but... the chest feels fine.  I can breathe in and out comfortably.  About 3/4 down the front of my ribcage it starts feeling like a corset. It's very uncomfortable.  I'd like to not cut it if possible, I like the full length of it.  Does anyone have any ideas to... make it fit better?  I thought I'd ask just in case anyone had an idea I hadn't thought of.  I'm going to try stretching it again but I'm not feeling optimistic about it doing much.  The only other idea I had was if I could take it to a tailor but that would be expensive enough that I might as well just buy another binder elsewhere.  (I just got the zipper replaced on my winter coat and that cost $35 but the parents were willing to pay for that one). Or does it just suck to be me? Lol xD

They take a bit to break in. but if it's dangerous don't try that.

Return it or donate it, maybe even try a trans group or something to see if anyone has had the same problem and can trade it for a bigger one.

Hope it works out for you,
Matt

Have you written to Underworks to say that there's a big size disparity? It could be a disparity between black and white, or maybe one was just mislabeled. Either way, I should think that the company would like to know. Maybe you can work out a deal.

P.S. My binders would relax a great deal over time. Unfortunately, you might not want to wear one that is cutting into you--at least, not for long enough for it to relax. I would keep stretching it and tossing it into the washer and dryer a few more times.

Thanks for the replies!
Yeah I e-mailed them.  It sounded at first like they were going to help me out but after I told them the exact amounts of the disparities they were silent.
Ah well, what can ya do?
Guess I'll just continue trying to stretch it out xD

Interesting. Reminds me of the nice lady in the vital records office in my birth state. I guess she thought I was trying to steal an identity; she stopped answering my e-mails. Thank you for nothing.

But sometimes your e-mail just gets lost in the shuffle...

I had this experience not too long ago! I have a full length binder I've used for a bit now (maybe 6+ months, but under a year), it's a medium. I go online to order one in a different color, choose the same size because that's what fits. It gets here - light years too small. At first I thought it was a matter of stretching/being worn in, but even after running my old binder through the wash and drying, and then wearing when it's at its tightest, it's not even close.

I ended up swapping it with a guy online who ordered too big. I then went and ordered the tri-top in a medium and it fits perfectly  ???

Haha yeah, exactly.  I guess that's the problem with e-mails.  Maybe I should have called them instead.  Oh well, too late now.  It's a learning experience.

That's very interesting! So I'm not the only one who's had this happen.  I wonder if this is an Underworks thing or if this happens with other companies too.  I really like the make of Underworks and their quality otherwise so I'm hoping these are more isolated cases rather than the norm. Very strange.

I used to order white Cotton Concealers from Underworks. I felt that the sizes were consistent, but the sizing chart (at least back then) was not fully accurate and caused me to order a too-large binder the first time. It worked, but not as well as the next size down. Unfortunately, I was losing weight at the time, too, so the large binder became pretty ineffectual pretty quickly--that is, because of the weight loss combined with the largish binder combined with the inevitable stretching. But the next size down was great.

I've ordered a medium tri top binder from underworks which was too small even though I had  meausured myself correctly. I had to return it and I ordered a large instead which fits. Might be an Underworks problem or just how binders are problem.
They/them pronouns preferred.

i ordered a large about two weeks ago. the chart said i was on the small side of large and on the high side of a medium. i chose the large to be safe and i felt as if it was too small. i'm breaking it in slowly but it still feels smaller then the last large i got. oh well though, i only need it until march when i get my top surgery so i will deal since it isn't restricting my breathing or anything.

Yeah I'm wondering if it's because of the material used is so stretchy and elastic.  Material in general can be finicky because of that, in my experience anyway.  The amount of fabric difference between these two were a lot, even with that considered though imo.  I think if I buy from them again I'll go a size up lol.

You could try making it damp and stretch it over something like a chair back and then let it dry if it's too tight.  It helped loosen things up for mine quite a bit.  The only problem with that, though, is you can't really control how much it loosens up lol.

I ended up cutting out the front stomach area of the binder on the inside so it's still full length but the corset feeling isn't there anymore.  Works brilliantly.

Oh, too bad. I was just about to suggest that you do what I used to do--fold the binder up over your chest so that you are double binding and don't have anything over your stomach. I got to the point where I had to double bind, whether this way or with two full-length binders.

Then again, you might find it uncomfortable.
