i have really wide hips, at least i think this is called hips, its that..curve part around your figure on the horizon of your navel. i guess im a pear shape. i wear a 36-38W/30L in pants, but only if i wear the waistband at my navel. i cant find many men's jeans and things above 38 at local stores like walmart and ->-bleeped-<-.

i havent bought a binder yet because most i see go down below the navel. i can barely wear men's shirts and jackets because they cannot go past my navel at all. i am about 170lbs and 5'6". my thighs are also really large. about 24.5 inches at the thickest part (near crotch).

can anyone suggest some exercise that would help reduce that curve thing i have around my hips/waist/whatever and my thighs WITHOUT giving my a "perfect beach ass" and some advice for pants or something? thanks in advance.

Try to build up the muscles on the sides of the abdominal area. I think the obliques are the ones you want? Basically, you want to exercise the muscles in the curvey part so that they'll beef up and make you look more rectangular- essentially trying to fill the gap. A quick google search gave me some suggestions- push up to side plank (or just a side plank, or a twisting side plank), seated barbell twist, side jackknife, bicycle crunches, seated russian twist, there's a ton. Lots of them involve twisting. It could also be beneficial to try bulking up your shoulders and upper body, to balance out your hips.
As for the hips and thighs, hopefully just working out in general is going to help you slim those down and lose some weight from there.

From the information you've given here, your BMI indicates that the best thing for you to do to alter your body shape is to focus on losing weight overall.  You can exercise your obliques to exhaustion, but if your body is covered in too much fat, the results won't be worth work because you'll still likely be out of proportion.

I would recommend looking at your diet and exercise as a whole to begin with.  Look at your eating habits and how often you are active.  Set goals for yourself - for instance, cutting out calories by 500 a day will start the ball rolling (always check with your doctor first, especially if you're diabetic).  Start looking into weight lifting - you will burn more calories by combining weight training with cardio.

Once you cut down your body fat percentage overall, you can really focus on training specific areas like your obliques.

i actually dont eat much at all. when i do eat, its about 60% protein, 30%vegetables and fruits, 10% oils, sugars and fats. (id been vegetarian for a few years)
but i dont eat every day and every meal (no food except at boyfriend's house).
my activity level is... pretty low, we game mostly. we walk the beach which is about 3 miles, almost every day or every other day for about 2-3 hours.
we also build swords and sword fight. so thats some exercise. but overall, id have to say my activity is low because i dont exercise often because of the humidity and heat in the south.

Hey Jasper,
I've been fighting the same shape (and humidity in the deep South!).  What is working for me is heavy lifting.  I'm loosing fat and building muscle and things are rearranging in the way I want them to go.  I lift 5-6 days per week, 2+ hours per day.  Yeah, it's a lot.  But I've got a lot of stress right now and it's keeping me sane as well as putting muscle where I want it to  go.  I'm focusing on building shoulders to even out my hip bones. Lots and lots of deltoid work (which takes care of my traps at the same time.)  The gain is slow, but noticeable.  (I've been working out since May and got super-serious on Sept  1st.) You might get results quicker.  I'm a bit older, so sometimes, results take longer for me.  When I stall from weight lifting, I add running/walking until the scales and my body changes again.

I'm down from a 38" to a loose 36".  Also, look at cut of jeans.  I stick with Levis.  The 529s are very loose.  Not very flattering, but plenty of thigh room.  The 514s are tighter in the thighs but still have plenty of butt room.  My faves are the 501s, but I couldn't wear them at first b/c of my hip to abs proportions.

In my experience, the only thing that works is putting in the sweat.  Good luck!

Cardio. Even if its just more walking. Get a cheap pedometer and try to walk 10,000 steps per day. Drink water. Make your meals smaller and space them out more. From what you listed, I would switch your percentages of fruit/veggies and protein. Your body converts excess protein and carbs into fat. If you have a low activity lifestyle, your protein needs are significantly lower.

Also, get a physical and ask them to calculate your body fat percentage. BMIs are deceptive. I'm 5'5" and I have a really thick core (from thighs through shoulders). I weigh around 180lbs. Pants are 36x30. The thickest part of my thigh is 22" around. My BMI (30) would tell you that I'm obese. But I have a very physical job and I work out regularly. My body fat percentage is between 22-23% - in the ideal range for women (I've started T less than a month ago). People carry weight in a lot of different ways. When you figure out what you're really working with, it's easier to figure out what to do with it.

As far as clothing: the Underworks tri-top binder ends at the bust line. I find that it's more comfortable for daily wear than the full-length tanktop style binder. Depending on how big you are at the mid-section, it may make it look like you're wearing an inner tube - BUT it works to compress the chest area. I get Target brand jeans in relaxed fit. They feel a bit roomier in the thigh and butt. From there, just layer. I know you said you're in the south/somewhere hot, so get some tanktops as a base layer, then get a couple t-shirts for over top.

Not much advice for trimming the bottom, but lots of sympathy-- I wear the same size.  A fair bit of it is fat, but not all and, while the numbers get smaller when I lose weight, the waist-hip differential also increases and the overall effect is more feminizing.  I'm loosing steadily by eating better and exercising more, because I want to be in better overall shape before starting T.  But the irony is that every pound I lose puts me further from passing.

For binders, I use the underworks tritop or a double-folded two-layer 9972 with as much success as I'd expect.  I've found that most jeans in a "relaxed fit", lee and wrangler pants work fine.  Shirts have to be tucked and jackets either loose or left unbuttoned (it's pretty geeky but it works).  The internet is your friend for odd sizes.  And thrift stores are your friend for clothes that are comfy but don't fit well enough to bother with full price.  Every so often you come across something perfect. If you or a friend can sew at all, doing your own basic alterations can widen your wardrobe considerably.

Good luck!

I've lost so much in the hips I can barely find a cushion for my injection. My ass is flat. T really, really trimmed me down. Now my doctor wants me to put on forty pounds.....muscle of course. There could be worse problems to have, I know, but give yourself some time, see what the t does for you. And work those glutes.
