Hadn't seen my father for nine months (basically since coming out and transitioning) and now I've had lunch with him twice in two weeks. First time he made a point of using my male name. This time he called me "mate" which I can cope with. At the end, he was saying something about me to my mother...could've sworn he said "she". It was noisy so I didn't quite catch it and didn't ask him to repeat himself. I'll take it as progress until I hear otherwise.

Well, it was either that or I need a hearing aid! (Very likely the latter, now I have hair over my ears I find I don't hear as well...)

Good news!  I hope you did hear him correctly.  :)

My therapist talks about having contact time with people as myself and giving their minds time to make the shift from seeing me as male to seeing me as female.  Maybe this is happening for him.

Maybe they did miss you on Christmas day and decided to talk it through?

Hope so!

Great news anyway!

That's so great. It always takes Dads longer to warm up to the idea but it sounds like you guys are making alot of progress.

You look more woman than a lot of women do... of course calling anything but she is like calling a butterfly a caterpillar. Or worst a maggot.

I think I'd be happier for him to call me a maggot than "he"... (not really!!)

I really hope so, that would be wonderful. The only person I really care about hating me about all of this is my Father. I'm so afraid that he'll hate me over it, I can't even think about it without losing my composure (*pause, and breath...*).

Especially with all of his religious friends, which are sure to be all like "see. SEE! He/she/it whatever... was wrong about everything because they were a pervert the whole time!" Siding with me will put him at odds with everyone he knows, and it might be better for him to disown me (saying that hurt).

Well, I can't say anymore about that...

I meant it like a deragatory term for a caterpillar which turns into a butterfly.

Grace,

Awesome news. Just having 2 lunches is progress alone but the "she" means he is starting to accept.

Hair over ???  Having a similar genetic defect as you I wish the hair on my head grew as well as the ones IN my ears  :o  Having come of age in the 60's and 70's I blame much of my hearing loss on too loud Rock music.

Awesome news with your dad Grace. Just him seeing you and being in the same room. The overwhelming majority of my group members have had issues with parents. Luckily not lasting too long.
