I'm on Blue Shield of California.  It paid about 40% at the end of it all.  I'll be writing up a blog post sometime in the future on it.

That's really not too bad. Did you choose your own surgeon, or did they choose one for you?

Hi Devin,
Congrats on getting surgery! I remember reading the article about you last fall. The wording in the article seemed a bit confusing to me in that it seemed like it was saying that Obamacare prevents transgender discrimination with insurance but it really seems like they mean the California law prevents it.

I know that Obamacare says that companies can't discriminate based on transgender reasons but nothing has really been said that it includes surgery just that companies can't block transgender people from being covered for things that anyone else would be covered for. In my mind if an insurance company covers vaginoplasty for a non-transgender person(I realize it's quite different) then it shouldn't be allowed to block that for a transgendered person but I know that it doesn't work that way...yet. Or does it? Maybe there was some policy change I missed? I feel like I'm very researchy and know the latest on things related to this since it matters a lot to me.

I work for a company with a self-funded plan so unless something federally prevents this discrimination then my corporate insurance won't cover it. I do live in Massachusetts though which just recently said that private insurance has to cover it so I think I can opt out of my work plan and buy my own.

Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated!! Congrats again!
