Advice on Trans* @ Work Training Proposal

A government agency near me has begun some work that is expected to flush out a lot of transphobia among employers.  They plan to remediate discrimination that they find by having employers bring in a trainer to do a "trans* at work" type of training.  They have asked me to be one of their trainers and they have asked me to submit a short, informal proposal that will spell out how long the training takes and how much it will cost.  The idea is that they will provide employers with a list of trainers and the employers will choose from that list.

I don't really have a standard presentation and I have always done everything for free.  I usually customize my talks to the audience, the setting, and the available time wherever I am.  So I'm wondering if anyone else has done this?  How much time do people take and how much do they charge?

I'm nothing close to a professional and I don't do formal trainings, but I spend a lot of time hashing out trans/lgb stuff with local agencies and businesses. If I were in your position I would contact a local trans organization to ask about formal presentations and what you should charge. If there aren't any agencies like that nearby you could try to get in touch with any other reputable lgbt organization to ask for advice. I like Lambda Legal and PFLAG.

Props for doing that work. I live in one of the most accepting cities in America and it's like pulling teeth just to get people to show basic respect.

I'm the head of the only local trans* org.  That's how I come to get asked to do things like this. :). One of the things we do is run a network that connects other trans* orgs in nearby jurisdictions.  But I'm involved in something that people are not yet supposed to know about, so I am being deliberately vague about where it is happening, what is going on, etc.  And I'm trying to avoid doing things that would lead to the secrets coming out.

I sometimes do work with NCTE, but I avoid PFLAG and Lambda.  Lambda has never been a source of helpful info.  With PFLAG I've dealt with chapters throughout the region plus their national HQ and found that they are usually an obstacle when it comes to organizing around trans* issues.  I'm glad you're experience has been more positive.
