my son 14 will start transition in a couple months and will be prescribed spironolactone . he has already lots of hair on the legs , upper lip and wants to have them remove later. he doesn't have a beard yet and i was wondering if starting the HRT will stop the growth of the beard or not ? he already went through puberty, has a very deep voice and i hoped he could take hormone blockers but the doctors think it is too late. thanks for your help

The blockers and HRT should stop any further masculinization for your son, including the appearance of new facial hair and changes to bone structure.

Unfortunately, existing facial hair is not affected by blockers or HRT. The same is true for the size/shape of the larnyx.

However, many trans women find that blockers and HRT reduce body hair significantly over time.

Facial hair can be lasered away if it's dark, or removed by electrolysis if not.

And even a deep voice can be trained to a female pitch, resonance, etc.  There are also voice surgeries that can help.

Also, the younger someone is, the more effect HRT is likely to have on feminine fat distribution, breast growth, etc. The changes for teens can be striking.

Thanks Eveline and Lordkat . we live in France and there is no information here about gender disphoria. doctors have no clue and keep saying nothing can be done until he's 18 . they don't have gender therapist neither. we will travel to thes states this summer to go to a gender clinic . i am thorn between the urgency to help him as i heard a lot the younger the better and the idea of going too fast .... 

While younger may be better, patience is still a virtue. I think they won't do much outside of blockers until someone is 16 in the US. I could be wrong.

HRT will stop any further developments of hair etc, but won't do anything for existing hair, unfortunately, and as far as I know. I don't know a lot about hormone blockers (I wanted them, but I'm sixteen and so unfortunately they won't do anything for me, as I've already developed female traits) but 14 could quite possibly be young enough to start.

Presumably if your child is going to be prescribed Spiro they wish to transition to a female gender identity? Your daughter will find the Spiro will stop her beard from fully developing. It will not reverse the deepening of her voice and she may find that body hair thins out but she may still need to depilate/wax further. It will stop any Adams apple from fully developing. Most genetic teen males at that age have a very active libido, but hers will drop. It will prevent any large scale masculinisation beyond this point (eg muscles, jaw shape, forehead ridge, etc).

Also, I think they have to be taken before or during puberty, if puberty is over, they don't really do much (as far as I know)
