Hey, guys.  I come out to all the staff at my company tomorrow and I need to decide if I should use Brett or Bret.  I have really been liking the look of one T lately (Bret), but I worry it will highlight that either I am different in some way or people won't know the name and will consider it a girl's name or something.  Even though according to the Social Security data base spelling it like Bret is rare, but people I am telling my name to keep asking the spelling.

Help me out here.  I have about 12 hours to decide.

Thanks!

people spell my name wrong all the time and i've never even seen it spelled the way they're spelling it. i don't think the single or double letter matters or makes you look "different." people just usually go "really?" and that's it when i tell them how it's really spelled. it's like any other name. my mom spells her name differently too and she just gets the whole "really?" response as well. people don't question it i don't think.

I like "Bret".  It just seems more masculine that way.

Two T's is more aesthetically pleasing to me.

That was a good point Devlyn Marie.  They could even mistake "Bret" for "Bart".  DOH!  For that reason alone, I'd go for "Brett" with 2 Ts.   ;)

Another vote for double T's!

Bret reminds me of Bret Easton Ellis, who is quite possibly the jerkiest writer I've ever read.

Most people will expect Brett since, as far as I know, that is the usual spelling. So unless you're happy to be constantly correcting people I'd go with that. It's one of the reasons I didn't spell my name with a silent "Q"... ;)

I am male because I say so and nothing more.
I don't have to look or act like one therefore.

Wowww, 22 to 2.  BreTT wins!  Thanks so much guys for your help not just in voting, but in the comments as to how BreT could be problematic.

MsGrace, you may find this interesting.  The name first started being using in England, often with Bret.  When the Australians began using it frequently in the mid 20th century, it was used exclusively with two TTs.  The name became pretty popular there.

For some reason I feel a connection to Australia, even though I have never been there.  That is another thing that makes the double T more attractive.

Thanks again guys.  Beginning today at work, I am BreTT!   :icon_dance:

Have a great day, all!
