Bill to allow transgender people to change birth certificates advances

http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_27791190/colorado-bill-would-let-transgender-people-change-birth

Jennifer Brown, The Denver Post
March 26, 2015

"The process of getting a court order certifying the transgender man had undergone gender reassignment surgery took more than a year. Even then, his new birth certificate included a notation that it was amended, leaving him open to uncomfortable questions should he present it to open a bank account or get a job".

"Legislation passed 8-5 by a House committee Thursday would ease that process, no longer requiring that transgender people have surgery or go before a judge to change the gender on their birth certificates. Instead, people would need only a note from a medical or mental health professional stating they were undergoing surgical, hormonal or other treatment."

Edited to forum posting and quotation format
"Choosing to be true to one's self — despite challenges that may come with the journey — is an integral part of realizing not just one's own potential, but of realizing the true nature of our collective human spirit. This spirit is what makes us who we are, and by following that spirit as it manifests outwardly, and inwardly, you are benefiting us all." -Andrew WK

This makes me super happy because I'm planning on going full time soon and this would make life a whole lot easier.

Stuff like this makes me love this state more and more each day.

Some states get it; others don't. I am super happy for the trans folk that live in Colorado  :)

Hopefully the state I was born in will eventually get it too (Kentucky), but i'm not holding my breath for it to happen anytime soon knowing that state.

We need a nationwide law regarding this.  It's not like a transgender person can choose the state in which they were born.

Similar thing happened here in Florida fairly recently, but with gender markers on licenses. I just got my doctor's letter for that, and am going for a motorcycle license soon, so can't wait to get that with an updated photo and a big 'F' on it. :)

Wow another reason I'm not happy I wasn't born in the USA. My birth country will likely never change the laws so I'm stuck with the M on my bc, I might burn it and send them the ashes along with a big hearty dose of FU.

Congrats to all the girls and boys getting theirs corrected though! Maybe one day we will come around.

Kate, an American passport will serve in place of a BC for most, if not all purposes. The feds are much more accommodating to people like us. Change your passport and store your BC, perhaps in the circular file?
April 22, 2015, the day of my first face to face pass in gender neutral clothes and no makeup. It may be months to the next one, but I'm good with that!

Being transgender is just a phase. It hardly ever starts before conception and always ends promptly at death.

They say the light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train. I say, climb aboard!

Yeah that's my plan. My naturalization certificate will also work.
