Dear friends:
I started my HRT today.  It was a struggle as I am sure all of us have faced to get this far.  I do have a question regarding hormones and that is what happens if one chooses to stop using them.  I am not saying I will  ever quit but I have some other issues that may make a difference in my ability to transition.  I didn't want to wait and see how they would or would not turn out so I have started.

Hello, Mary,

You are correct in noticing that gender hormones like estrogen are "strong medicine" and are not to be used in a casual manner.

I have been on estrogen, both oral and injectable, since July 2, 2002.  I will be required to stop using it prior to GRS and I am not looking forward to that.  I have never spoken to anyone who found life pleasant when they stopped their hormone usage.

May I recommend that you talk with your doctor before you stop?  She/he might be able to give you a schedule to taper-off your dosage instead of stopping "cold turkey."
