Is this a harmful behaviour...?

Often times, between shaves, I'll catch myself pulling stray facial hairs out. I know it's harmful in the sense that it's painful, but is this actually a self-destructive behaviour? I know that there is a legitimate disorder that involves pulling the hair from one's own head, but I don't believe that I have that at all. The subconscious thought process behind it is that if I pull them, they won't be as likely to grow back, or at least won't grow back as quickly, but I got to thinking that maybe this is actually doing more harm than good...can anyone help me? I don't want to screw my face up.

I'd say its kind of a subconscious habit...
you want the hairs removed and don't want to wait...

you just might concentrate on something else and simply cover the area with the next shave...

I would say it isn't a self-destructive habit. It however would be if for instance you were doing it with the intentions of inflicting pain on yourself. That being said, intent means a lot in my opinion. You have masochists found in the D/s scene that enjoy pain but yet experience it in a responsible way. (Most of the time, again imo.)

It is exactly what Laura said. You just want the hairs gone, now! =)

PS: I love the new avatar, your hair looks awesome! *Envious*

The only fault I can see with it is that it can lead to ingrown hairs, just as waxing can.
April 22, 2015, the day of my first face to face pass in gender neutral clothes and no makeup. It may be months to the next one, but I'm good with that!

Being transgender is just a phase. It hardly ever starts before conception and always ends promptly at death.

I agree with Dee. I used to do it too. I'd get my beard waxed from time to time and would pluck between sessions. When I started electro my tech told me to stop with the plucking and the waxing as it can cause ingrowns but also distort the follicle and make removal via electro (and, presumably, laser) much harder. Haven't plucked since!

I plucked a facial hair once to see how much it hurt as compared to other parts of the body and I found it quite painful so yikes. o.O

As others have said the first thing that came to mind here was ingrown hairs.

I've done it a few times. I find shaving closer to my nose hard and plucking solves it. I've stopped in preparation for my first laser session. My consolidation is next friday.

That was one of my worries. I wasn't sure if it could lead to that, but I thought it was possible.

Overall, it seems like it's not necessarily harmful, just something subconscious that probably isn't a good idea. I don't really notice the pain, but I'm used to cutting out my own ingrown toenails, a little hair-plucking is nothing.
