'REBECCA ROMIJN was so determined to accurately portray a transsexual in hit TV show UGLY BETTY, she asked her transgender pals for acting tips.'

Wow, she's got two transgender friends.
Not many can say that.

If the 1/30000 was true, she'd have less
chance of having that than being hit by lightening
twice in the same year.
But, we know that stat isn't true...

I know that isn't true as I have many friends in real life who are trans. Not counting all the people on Susans and other boards.

Come On Redfish, a show's about ratings. You want to highest profile person in a role (that's also a good actress). There's very view good transgender actresses (and although many have a quite high idea of themselves, their acting is not up to snuff if you ask me).

At least in Rebecca romijn, they cast someone who could plausibly be a TS, she's tall, well built with broad shoulder and a she has a strong jawline.

I'm glad they're not doing something CRAZY like having transgender actors play transgender people!

Hmmm, from what I understand, the girl that plays the TS girlfriend on Dirty, Sexy Money is actually TS.  I've never watched the show but that's what I've heard.

imo, she did a pretty good job... its one of the few shows where HRT has been even MENTIONED....
and finally an attractive female playing a ts female... i was getting sick of the male actors in skirts and heavy makeup.... not all TS women look like men, and finally a mass media agreement with this.

Why not have the actor like act normal, not trying to act transgender, but have the world still treat the character as if they are transgender, even though to the audience they are perfectly normal.  That would be more interesting to me than what amounts to blackface for transpeoples.
  •

Rachael

it wasnt as much ACT transgender, but some ways trans people react to the subject, and talking about the subject, which her character does, tbh, she acts entirely normally anyway...

Sarah, actually, in Ugly Betty, the character's TS status rarely comes up, except they need to bring it up sometimes so we know she is. She's just a regular beautiful gal.

There's no "blackface" at all. Its a very respectfull show.

I don't believe you have to put a TS actor in a TS role, more than you need to put a gay in a gay role, or a crippled in a cripple role. You put the best actor you can get regardless of whatever tags they have. As I said, there's very few decent TS actors, and none well known, so why should they get a pass and get roles just because of their status. I see no reason for it.

Knight in grey's anatomy is gay and he's slept with half the women he's met in the show, including the beautiful Katherine Heigl as Izzie!

quite a lot of ts actors, actresses, and models... they just arnt all out ;)

If they were any major ones, they would be outed.
There is no way an actor or actress can be stealth.

Most play very minor roles, or plainly suck.
IF 1/1000 are TS and 1/10000 are out (my estimation),
its perfectly normal that there would be almost none
in all holliwood.

Asians are a huge part of american society and you barely see any asians in primary roles except in Kung Fu movies. Again, why should we have more visibility than others? No reason at all.

I'm all for fairness, for all.

i dont think your right... nearly half of hollywood are LGB or t... :P and they can hide thier sexuality very easily. i think its perfectly possible to be steath and an actor/actress if you transition early enough, lets remember, not everyone transitions as an adult, with papertrails...

I bet I could de-stealth anybody in 30 minutes just by paying one of the thousands of agencies on the internet $20 dollars. There is ALWAYS a paper trail. Even people in withness protection can be traced (and some have been and killed).

Stealth doesn't exist, especially for public figures.
Journalist will dig till it bleeds into your past.
All TS who find their way in show business are not stealth and are doing bit parts.

Also remember that until recently the number of people who
transitioned was very low.

Another thing. succeeding in Holliwood is a combination of talent, looks and plain luck. The chance of anyone, let alone a TS, getting all that is very very small.

Although there is a lot of gays in holiwood, I'd be surprised
there would be more than 15%, a far cry from 50%. Also,
most are not actors, but are in the writing, producing,
costuming, etc. There's a lot of pressure on an actor who's
openly gay in hollywood even now, and many prefer
not being in front of the camera.

Since most post-op TS value their privacy, I don't why they'd
even want to go into show business where your life is exposed
publicly.

you are somewhat wrong. your saying ts people cant be attracitve? i think your sadly mistaken.

and as far as papertrails, i dont think so, i have one googleable link on the net, to a booking thread on a sport forum, and im untraceable... even my school and uviversity records were changed to show they have always been this way, i dont think its beyond someone to burry thier own papertrail, or make a new one. its not hard.
you could destealth someone? id not even contemplate it.
most post ops value privacy? um, i value a normal life, and im sure most post ops think the same.
im preop, yet im visibly involved in students union politics, and write for an international airsoft mag. thats fairly the oposite, and so far, nobody knows my past... and im happy with it staying that way
i think your being overly critical Kiera, and somewhat demeaning and judgemental, i wouldnt be suprised if you said you were one of those people who can read ANY trans person...

'stealth doesnt exist' is pretty clear, as is her attitude and general negativity.

I have to agree Keira.  My whole ambition once I transitioned was to be Stealth,  and I think I mentioned this in an older thread.  However remaining in the city where I transitioned and the haunts I frequented ensured that possibility didn't happen.  The main thing is though I'm happy with the way the present situation is, and being happy is the main thing.  :)

i dont see how its not possible to be utterly stealth... after university, im moving far away, to start my life. and likely nobody will know. I have no desire to shy away from an interesting life for fear of being outed. i wont be outed, and i refuse to cower in a corner...

Alexis Arquette is the only Hollywood person I can think of who transitioned in public.  I'm not sure of her surgical status but she now lives full time.  She has seen some limited exposure on TV (other than news related).  Candis Cayne, the TS who plays a TS on Dirty Sex Money, is the first and only (as far as I know) TS to play a TS on TV.

Little by little Hollywood is showing it's not so afraid to venture into the TG world.  As you said Kiera, ratings are all that matters and if featuring TS people increases ratings we will see more of it.

I admire Rebecca Romijn for her dedication to be as accurate as possible in her portrayal of a transwoman.  And that she openly admits she has trans friends just warms my heart.  We need more public figures who aren't afraid to admit they have trans friends or know trans people and see them as ordinary everyday people.

Julie
When you judge others, you do not define them, you define yourself.

Rebecca Romijin looks like she could be trans, then again, a lot of models do. Must be the height.
