Miley Cyrus opens up about sexuality, gender struggle

Singer and actress Miley Cyrus is speaking out about her struggle with gender identity and why she doesn't want to label her sexuality.

"I didn't want to be a boy," the former Hannah Montana star explained. "I kind of wanted to be nothing."

Cyrus told Out she doesn't relate to traditional gender definitions.

This is huge. The first time to my knowledge that a household name has come out as non-binary.

I agree.  I don't follow celebrities but acknowledge that Miley was also born and developed physically without being asked the question about gender.  Regardless of our physical manifestations out real identity is not always on display.

Her star status does not invalidate her ability to feel the rigidity of our cultural boxes and speak up about it.

Hopefully they won't be dragged through the mud as an unacceptable representative of our community......like B Jenner was.

Is she really NB or just doesn't like the restrictions of gender roles? I don't mean to offend, just a bit skeptical. It's great that she's spoken out and set up the charity though, she's smarter than lot of people give her credit for.

I find this to be far more interesting than Bruce Jenner's interview.

I was thinking the same thing. I'm having a hard time even taking her seriously.  There are feminists who are also non gender conforming as well.  Maybe this was her point?  If she identifies as non binary, why didn't she just refer to herself this way?  The term "nothing" is really non specific.  If she meant non binary, how do we know if she's telling the truth?  This could be a publicity stunt.

There are reasons if I was famous and coming out that I would not be specific either. Yes it is possible it is publicity stunt however we all don't go out to our nearest street and yell out deepest darkest secrets either do we? By leaving some vagueness or mystery it also brings out some thought to the subject since well the viewer just might actually think a bit.

Just my 2 bits and in one way cant judge a book by its cover so lets read inside it a bit first before we judge.

I for one was not placing judgement on Miley Cyrus.  I'm only trying to understand what she means when referring to herself as a "nothing".  Miley was a former child star before she became a popstar and is the daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus, so her life has been in front and around cameras.  She and controversy are no strangers as well.  These are the reasons why it's difficult for me to take what she says and does seriously.  I will give her credit in regards to how well she turned out as an adult.  There have been many former child stars who ended up broke, emotionally disturbed, addicted to drugs or even dead due to suicide or a drug overdose.  She's certainly in much better shape than those people. 

If Miley turns out to be a non binary, than I'd like to see real evidence of it.  I would want her to adopt a more gender ambiguous image and even include non binary themes in her music.  The climate is ready for it.  Keep in mind that we had Boy George more than 30 years ago, so yeah .... the time is right for an out of the closet non binary.     

In one way, that's cool, in another, I'm not sure she's a great representant... she doesn't exactly have a great reputation with everyone, especially with many parents.

Suzi reminded everyone of the TOS so I will unlock this but will watch it closely.

Miley Cyrus is free to adopt and present whatever image she chooses to and it is not up to us to make demands upon her to fit our ideas of how she should present.

Good on her I say. I'm totally uninterested in her music and whatnot but I applaud her bravery.

I believe I am following the guidelines, thank you.  Not once have I made demands on Cyrus or anyone else for that matter.  Wanting something from her is a far cry from demanding it or telling her how she should present herself.  With that, I am moving on.  I have nothing more  to say on this topic since I am being misunderstood.

Non-binary includes genderfluid. If they want to be Miley on Tuesday and Melee on Thursday it's completely their decision.

mtv braless (who I'm sure some of you are familiar with) just posted a really decent video on youtube around this for more public exposure. Regardless of Miley, I think she brought up some good stuff!

I'm not a fan of hers personally, but good on her for being open about this regardless.

I don't see what the concern of what label she uses or doesn't is. When I first came out as trans I wanted to use the label bi-gender. But then I noticed that label usually refers to people that are gender-fluid, which I'm not. So I said forget it, I'll just go with transgender. More recently I realized that non-binary can mean a lot of things including in between genders but it can mean a lot of other things too. I would think that "not being limited to restrictions of gender roles" could also be non-binary. Gender fluid could also be non-binary.

Anyway I see myself as a 7 or 8 out of 10 twords being female. At the very least that makes me transgender. Non-binary seems to make sense. but whatever you want to call it, it really doesn't matter. Most people don't understand transgender. Trying to get them to understand non-binary is even worse.
